MARINES PROCEED TO PANAMA Even Bluefields, Headquarters of Pro- visional Government, Is Atremble —Gen. Estrada’s Only Chance ts Aid From U. &. Washington, Dec. 12—When the 700 marines aboard the Dixie ar- rived at Colon they found awiting them orders to proceed immedi- ately to Panama and go aboard the crulser Buffalo at once. This seems to indicate that some move- ment of consequence on the Pacif- i¢ coast of Nicaragua is in con- templation. Bluefields In Danger. Bluefields, Nicaragua, Deo. 12.— This city, the headquarters of the provisional government, has been thrown into. alarm by a sudden realization of the strength of the povernment army against which General Estrada, the leader of the insurgents, had been supposed to be making irresistible headway. Estrada, apparently, has been hoodwinked by Zelaya, and no one would be surprised if the latter's | troops should appear before the city at any hour. Etrada is hop- ing for timely aid from the United | States. Zelaya Gaining Ground. Bluefields, Nicaragua, Dec. 12.. —~ ‘There has been a sudden and unpleas- ant realization here of government strength and insurgent weakness. President Zelaya has outwitted Gen- eral Estrada and the latter's chief hope is in American intervention. It turns out that the conference which was sought by General Vasquez, of the government troops, near Rama and which the insurgents had interpreted |as a sign of yielding on the part of Zelaya’s troops was a blind intended to secure a delay of the expected bat- tle until the loyal army had obtained a decided advantage of position. It also is learned that while Zelaya had kept a scattered force before Rama, his real army of 3,000 men was hurrying by forced marches toward Bluefields. The report that descent upon this city from Rama was possible only by river now is known to be un- true, General Estrada endeavored to cov- er his alarm by informing the corre- spondents at the front that all wags tranquil, with the prospect that Gen- eral Vasquez and Major Eva would surrender. Ten minutes after be had talked with the reporters the insur- gent leader had his chief diplomatic aide, Adolfo Diaz, on the telephone and was telling him what was believed to be the true situation. To the aide General Estrada declared that the Americans should send more marines ashore, as Vasquez had apparently out- |flanked him. Estrada also expressed the opinion that a request should be made of the United States govern- ment for protection to the 150 Ameri- cans in Bluefields, Diaz rushed to United States Consul Moffatt with the new intelligence, and HEATHERBLOOM PETTICOATS | $2.29 |] $2.50 Shits going at $1.19 aT O’DONNELL’S THIS WEEK Only a few left the consul assured him that Command- er Shipley’s marines from the United States cruiser Des Moines with their rapid fire guns would be able to con- trol the situation here in the event that the loyal army should suddenly surprise the city. If President Taft is determined that Zelaya shall be deposed it is believed here that he United States forces will find active participation in the strug- gle necessary. The Americans here have been as- sured that the marines from the Des Moines are sufficient to cope with any situation, even with the 3,000 well- armed government soldiers; but the provisionals, who are unfamiliar with military discipline, wish more Ameri- can marines here. Apparently Gen. Estrada has reach- ed a stage where he feels that the sit- uation is critical unless the Amert- cans are prepared to assume active and supreme control. At present Com- mander Shipley awaits further orders from Admiral Kimball. All idea of the enemy attacking for- tified Rama has been abandoned. The truce which covered the conference of | the government envoys and which was said to have been arranged to further conceal the march of Zelaya’s men through the hills towards Bluefields is at an end. At the conference Zelaya’s representatives used every pretext to delay coming to the point and when the conference finally came to an end it was with a demand that he insur- gents in the vicinity of Rama surren- der. — CLAPP ON THE WARPATH.
