Pursuant to adjournment the Board of County Commisssioners of Itasca county, Minnesota, met at the Court House in the Village of Grand Rapids the 23rd day of August, A. D. , 1909. Members present: Commissioners Trebilcock, King and McWilliams. An adjournment was then taken to 1:30 o’clock p. m. Pursuant to adjournment the Board again met at 1:30 o’clock p. m. Ail members present. Martin Dufficy came before the Board in regard to the improvement of certain hills on a road running to his place at Pokegama lake. Com- missioner Trebilcock moved that the chairman appoint a committee of three to examine said highway. The motion was seconded by Commission- er McWilliams and carried by unan- imous vote. Commissioners Trebilecock, O’Brien }; and Mullins were appointed as such committee. The bids for the construction of County Road No. 63 were then opened and read as follows: William Smith, $1,400.00 per mile. Arscott & Benton, $2.89 per rod. Theodore & Melvin Rosholt, for a total sum of $6,400.00. P. S, Kenney, $1,000.00 per mile. J. E. Erickson, for a total sum of $5,800.00. John O’Brien, for a total sum of$5,- 000.00. The bid of Arscott & Benton be- ing the best and lowest bid, Com- missioner Trebilcock moved that said bid be accepted, and that a contract be entered into with said Arscott & Benton for the completion of said road by the first day of November, 1909. The motion was seconded by Commissioner O’Brien and carried by unanimous vote. N. D. Fairbanks came before the Board and requested the Board to increase the amount of Wolf Bounty. Mr. A. J. McGuire came before the Board and requested an appropria- tion of $250.00 for the erection of a building for children’s exhibits at the County Fair Grounds. He advised the Board that Mrs, Booth, County Superintendent of schools had already raised the sum of $250:00 to aid in the errection of said building. He also requested an appropriation for a building for townships’ exhibits. Commissioner King moved that the sum of $250.00 be appropriated from the County Revenue Fund to be ex- pended in connection with the $250.00 raised by County Superintendent of Schools, Mrs. Booth, in the con- struction of a building at the County Fair Grounds, for children’s exhibits. The motion was seconded by Com- missioner 0’Brien and carried by un- animous vote. " Commissioner O’Brien moved that the sum of $500.00 be appropriated for the errection of a building for township exhibits, There was no second to the motion. John S. Lofberg furnished the Board with an estimate for the re- pair of the cellar at the poor house. A petition was presented for the establishment of a highway begin- ing at the section corner of sections 29, 30, 31 and 32, township 55, range 25, and running thence south on sec- tion line as near as practicable to the southeast corner of lot 2, section 6, township 54, range 25. Commis- sioner King moved that a- hearing be had upon said petition at the Court House, Grand Rapids on_ the 16th day of October, 1909, at 10 o’clock a. m.; that M. O’Brien, John P. Tre- pileock and C. M. King, members of the Board, be a com mittee to ex- amine the route of ‘said proposed road; that said committee meet at the point of beginning of said route on Saturday the 9th day of October, 1909, at 10 o’clock a. m. for the pur- pose of examining said route of said road and that said committee make report to this board at the time set for, hearing upon said petition. The motion was seconded by Commission- er O’Brien and carried by unanimous vote. A petition was presented for the vacation of a portion of a road known as the Bearville-Carpenter road and for the establishment of a new portion of said road. The said petition not being in regular form and not having the requiedr number of signers, no action was taken there- on. The following applications for correction of assessment and abate- ment of taxes were approved: W. Potter, 1; Wm. Dibbert, 1; Elizabeth J. Huntley, 1; E. J. McGowan, 1. Commissioner Trebilcock moved the adoption of the fololwing resolu- tion: ‘‘Whereas, the county jail of the county of Itasca has'been de- termined by this Board to be far too small to properly care for the number of prisoners to be confined in said jail, and that in order to pro- perly care for said prisoners it will be necessary to enlarge said jail so as to provide 20 additional cells. Therefore be it resolved, by the Board of County Commissioners of Itasca county, Minnesota, that said County jail be enlarged so as to pro- vide 20 additional cells, 10 on the first or ground floor and 10 on the second floor. Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the State Board of Control as pro- vided by section 5481 of the revised laws. of 1905. Sealed Bids Sealed bids will be received by the Board of County Commissioners of Itasca county Minnesota, up until 10 o'clock a. m., on Wednesday the 22nd day of September, 1909, at the office of the county auditor in the Village of Grand Rapids for making the fol- lowing improvements upon a certain highway in said county known as “State Road No. 1”. The said im- provements to be as follows: Beginning at the bridge over Kerr brook on the state road, and running north to the north end of drainage ditch on said road, grade all black or turf soil to a width of 11 feet, crowned one foot high in the center with gradual slope to each side of grade. All clay or mixed clay, sand and turf soils 16 feet wide, crowned two feet high in center with gradzal slops to each side. Straighten the grade on both sides the entire length of designated road. In leveling and grading, all soil of everv kind should be moved to the west. None on to berm. Ff All washouts to be filled with soi! taken from west side of the gradt and not within 16 feet of the wes* side of the grade. At the north end of the drainage ditch finished work partially done for a distance of only one-half mile end- ing at the 16th post one-fourth mile south of N. E. corner of section 26, township 147, range 25.
