The great peat deposits scattered through the northern part of the United States, especially ia Minne- Sota and Wisconsin, have at yarious times aroused strong public interest but the real value of peat, many fine beds of which are known to exist in McLeod county, has never been ap- preciated as a commercial commodity in the Northern States, according to C. A. Davis, the peat expert of the U. S. geological survey. A few weeks ago, when the an- thracite coal miners went out ona strike and terrorized the country it brought the people to an under- standing of how dependent we are on these miners and their employers for an important part of our fuel sup- ply. At this time a oumber of writers familiar with the conditions of the countries of Northern Europe called attention to the fact that those countries, possessing a climate more severe than ours, were using great quantities of peat for fuel while inthis country, although the material 1s abundant, it had only been prepared for use in a few isolat- ed cases, and then in the crudest way. During the next few months many experimental and speculative plants were established io Minnesota, Wisconsin and Maine to conyert peat into fuel, and it began to look as ifa peat industry were to be added to the list of American outputs. But principally through ignorance of the proper methods to employ most of the plants proved financially unsuc- cessful, and when the coal strikers were amicably satisfied no further effort was made to convert the vast WILL BE BIGGEST the Coming State Fair, Will be Far More Pretentious than “Fort Ridgeley in ’62.” ‘Minnesota at Gettysburg,” the big spectacle announced for the coming” Minnesota State Fair, September 6 to 1l, is already beginning to take form and substance, although the fair is many weeks away. The magnitude of this spectacle, which is to succeed the ultra successful “Fort Ridgeley in 62” of last year, is indicated by the fact that the scenery which wilk picture Cemetery Hill and various other parts of the field at Getysburg, on which the gallant First Minnesota so distinguished itself is 626 feet long, three times as long as any “picture” ever before placed in front of the Minnesota State Fair grandstand. Carrying out the scenic effects in connection with this spectacle, will be the biyouac of the Confederate troops at one end of the picture, the famous reach orchard toward the center, and the equally famous wheat field at the other end. So excelleut will be the scenic investiture that the charge down the hill toward the Con- federate lines will be an actuality for both infantry and mounted men and will undoubtedly be the most thrill- ing spectacle eyer offered to a state fair crowd. The artist’s model for the produce tion was completed last week and Su- perintendent of Amusements B. E. Gregory has already at work in the Agriculture and Horticulture Build- lng a corps of scene painters, carpen- ters and artists who are rapidly put- ting the production into shape. The staging of the forth-coming spectacle, wealth of peat in these states into commercial advantage. Mr. Davis, the government peat expert, has made investigations of the peat fields of Minnesota, and he says there is an unlimited store of the finest grade of beat only waiting for the proper channels to turn into a valuable commercial asset for the state. Next to Main and Wisconsin, Minnesota has the largest and finest quality of peat bedsin the country and probably in North America. In Ireland, Scotland, Holland and other Northern Eurpoean countries peat is cultivated, and the industry has as a sound footing. Peat is. used almost. exclusively as fuel in some ‘parts of these countries. It is clean, throws out a good heat andis eco- nomical. There is a far greater store of peat in this country than all three of those countries combined. ————————— Order to Hear Petition For License to Sell Land of Minor.
