Children ana Sleep, One of the greatest mistakes @& parents and those who have charge of children is that they are likely to ailow the young ones too little time to sleep. Wth one excuse or anoth- er the youngsters are up later at night than they should be, and as they must be off to school betimes in the morning and there may be duties to perfor they ate called before they have finished their morning nap. Chik dren, as a rule, ought to sleep ten or eleven hours, and to do this they must be put to ped early enough at might so that they may get this amount of uninterrupted rest.—Modern Wom- en. Few Wornen Faint. It ie a curious fact, of general re mawk, and observed not by physicians only, that fainting is less common Shan it used to be. It is rare that one sees a woman carried out of a church er theater, yet forty years ago it was a matter of such common occurrence as barely to excite remark. This fa due in very great measure to the out- door life young women lead in these days of tennis and golf and other sports. The heart and the circulation arc strengthened by exercise in the open air and it takes a great shock to disorder the tiood balance in the body of the modern woman. Scared by the Sentence. When the late Judge Newton of Southboro presided over the court in Westboro, he had before him one day & poor and illiterate Frenchman ao cused of selling Nquor. As it was his first offense, he was fined $50. Evidently $50 was a fortune to the Frenchman, and it was also evident that he had a vague conception of the seriousness of his crime, for, turn: ing a startled look on the judge, he exclaimed in wild tones: “For God’s cake, judge, why didn’t yer hung me?” —Boston Herald. A Sick Room Hint. If hot applications are required for @ person taken suddenly ill, when the fire is out and there is no better com venience for heating at hand, a lamp chimney fills the breach admirably. Light the lamp full head and in a twinkle the chimney {s hot and ready for use when wrapped in a woolen eloth. A stove lid answers the same purpose when the fire has been re pined. THE ETERNAL RECOMPENSE. A Little Comparison Who Makes the School Room Bright. The open door of theschool struck terror to your vacation loving soul. It seemed as if all joy had gone forever. But you forgot all that when your eyes strayed across the room. Prim, berib- boned heads bent with studious affec tation over books. Demure eyes stole sidewise glances in your direction. You regarded them impersonally until there came the one thrilling, fleeting flash of brown eyes for which you had been waiting. Blushing deeply, you turned to lose yourself in life’s serious business. 4 On your way home, by the merest chance, you found your footsteps beat- ing slow cadence with hers. Awk- wardly you tried to conceal the delight of this almost forgotten joy. Once more life was bright with their irri- descent glamour of youth. The call of the river was lost among the dim, unregretted memories of the past. School—ah, school was not so bad, after all. Turned Him Against It. “Tommy won’t.take milk at all now. He doesnt like it as much as he did,” said Mrs. Popley. “No,” replied Popley, “and it’s all on account of your imprudence.” “My imprudence?” “Yes; he overheard you saying it was good for him.” uant to due notice given to each | ORDINANCE ‘NUMBER 60.
