Pursuant to call, the board of county com- missioners of Itasca county, Minnesota, met at tne court house in the village of Grand Rapids, this 24th day of October, 1908. ‘All members of the board present. | The first matter taken under consideration was the matter of the petition for the incor- poration of the village of Calumet. Attorney C, C. McCarthy appeared in behalf of the Oliver Iron Miuing company and re- quested the board to aisapproxe the petition. stating various reasons w' pea same should not be eesibed He also filed certain petitions Lb png ng against the incorporation of said village. Mr. John C. Greenway, superintendent of the Oliver Iron Mining company then ad- dressed the board, explaining the various ways in which the operation of his company would be hampered if the mines were includ- ed within the limits of the village. ¢ Attorney Victor L. Power appeared in be- half of the petitioners and explained to the board that all the provisions of the Statutes had been complied with and urged the Board to adopt a resolution approving the petition, fixing a time and place for holding an election to vote a the question of the incorporation of said village and appointing inspectors for said election. He also filed certified et of petitions for the incor, ion of the villages of Hibbing and Chisholm in St Louis county, and be expiained to the board that a number of mines were located within the anege atE of said villages of Hibbing and Chis- olm. Commissioner Sundloff moved that the pe- tition be roved and that ‘a resolution be lopted ordering an election, fixing a time and place for holding said election and Sp. pointing inspectors to act as judges at said election, a copy of said resolution being filed with the county auditor. There was no second to the motion. a Commissioner O’Brien then moved that the petition for the incorporation of the village . of Calumet be rejected’ The motion was se- conded by Commissioner Passared and upon roll call the vote was as follows: “Yea"': 3; Passard, O’Brien and Mullins. “Nay”: Sund- i) loft; Commissioner King not voting. Chairman Mullins thereupon declared the ; motion to reject the petition carried. An adjournment was then taken to 1:30 — o'clock P. M, : Pursuant to adjournment, the board again met at 1:30 P. M. All members of the board present. Mr. Culver of Keewatin came before the board and requested the board to make ap- plication to the state public examiner for an examination of the accounts of the village of Keewatin. Upon motion of Commissioner Passard, seconded by commissioner Sundloff, the matter was referred to the County attor- ney, to be taken up at the next meeting. Commissioner O’Brien moved that the coun- ty Surveyor be instructed to make a survey of the Blackberry-Feeley road and prepare plans and specifications for constructing the F Same. The motion was seconded by Commis- sioner Passard and carried by unaaimous vote. ‘The bids for the construction of the Hul- burt road in vownshih ae ran, 25, which were presented to the board at their meeting ‘ held September 26th, 1908, and were continued to this meeting, were then taken np. Commissioner King moved that bid of L. E \ Hunter and A, L. Cochran be accepted, The motion was seconded by Commissioner O’Brien and carrid by unanimous vote. It being the time set for hearing upon the etition for the estabiishment of the Swan River-Feeley road; beginning at the coruer of sections 15, 16, 21 and 22, township 53, range 22, and running’ west on section line to the right-of-way of the Great Northern Railway; | thence in @ northwesterly direction parallel | with said right-of-way, to a point near Swan — | River Station; thence crossing said right-of- } | way; thence running in a northwesterly di- rection to a point on the south sixteenth line of section 12. township 53, range 23; thence west on the sixteenth line across sections 12 Land 10, to the section line on the west side ‘ of said section 10; thence north on section line to the town line, between townships 53 | and 54, range 23; thenzh west to the south- east corner of section 34, 54-23; thence north | on section line to the northeast corner of said section 84; thence west one-quarter mile; a1 thence north to Feeley. The committee appointed to examine the route of said prop- osed road filed their report in which they r-- commend that the prayer of the petitioaers be granted, and setting forth tue courses and distances upon which the route of suid road runs, The report of the committee was then con- sidered by the Board and an opportunity given for the hearing of any protest that might be offered, or damages Claimed by any —, person, by reason of the establishment of | said road. There being no objections filed or offered or damages claimed by any person by reason of the establishing of said road. Commissioner King moved that the report of the committee v4 be approved and that said highway be and ~ the same is hereby established according to the committee's report; that J. J. Ole Hanson was present and asked that a part of the Feeley and Bory, road running across his land in the town of Trout Lake be straightened. Commissioner O’Brien moved that a committee of 3to be appointed by the chairman ofthe board make an examination of said road. The motion was seconded by Commissioner King and carried by unani- mous vote. It being the time set for hearing upon the penta for the establishment of the Drum- ater road, the committee filed the following report: “To the Board of County Commissioners of the County of Itasca, Minnesota: The uncersigneG committee appointed by you to examine the proposed route of a high- way, as stated in the petition referred to in your order of sopemene made on the 27th day of August. 1908, would eearentsaity) report that we met at the time and place design- ated in your said Order, and _ proceeded to ex- ee the highway proposed to be establish- ed. viz: Beginning at the one-eighth post on the section line midway between the east quarter post and the southeast corner of section 12, township 55, range 27, and running thence west on eighth line to the northwest corner of lot 3 of said section 12; thence continuing west on the eighth line to the point where said eight \ine intersects the north and south quarter line of section 11 in said_ township 55, range 27; thence south on quarter line to the quarter post on the south side of said section 11; thence west on section line to the south- west corner of said section 11; thence south on section line to the southeast corner of the northeast quarter of northeast quarter (NE of NE%) of section 15in said township 55. range 27; thence west on eighth line to the southwest corner of lot 1, section 16, in said township 55. range 27; nce north to the southeast corner of section 25, township 144, range 25; thence west on section line to the southwest corner of lot 14 of said section 25; thence north on eighth line to the northwest corner of said lot 14; thence west one-eighth line to Mississippi river. Jones in the sum of 3150.00, The motion was sec- onded by Commissioner O’Brien and carried by unanimous vote. Commissioner King then moved that the report of the committee be approved; that said highway be and the same is hereby esta- blished according to the committee's report: that damages be assessed to J. T. Jones in the sum of $150.00 for right-of-way over his land and that as to all other lands over which said road runs, the advanges and benefits be assessed equal to the damages. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Passard and carried by unanimous vote. It being the time set for hearing upon the ote applications for liquor licenses wit : Chas. D. Commissioner King meved that the sum of $300.00 be appropriated from the county road and bridge fund to the town of Grand Rapids, to aid said townin the improvement of the Zeininger road. Commissioner King moved that the sum of 350.00 be appropriated from the county road and bridge fund to be expended under the direction of W, F. The motion was seconded by Com- missioner Sundloff and carried by unanimous vote. A petition was presented requesting the board to appoint Peter L. Ramquist inspector of mines pursuant to the provisions of chal ter 166 of thelaws of 1905. Upon motiop the said petition wis laid over until the next meeting for further consideration. Commissioner King moved that the $300.00 appropriation made to the town of Bigfork at a meeting held June 12th. 1908, to be expended in the construction of the State road be trans- ferred. to be expended on the Mitchell road in said town of fork, The motion was se- conded by Commissioner Sundloff and carried by unanimous vote.
