From an article in the Raib way Magazine about a steam vessel mamed the Charlotte Dundas, which Symington, a Scotsman, constructed in 1801 for the Forth and Clyde canals, we extract the following passage: “After a successful trial in 1789 with a (steam) boat which attained a speed of six miles an hour, Symington, the inventor qf the steamboat, at the re- quest of Lord Dundas, constructed a steamer in 1801 to be used as a tug on the canal. This vessel was named the Charlotte Dundas and was tried in March, 1802, when it towed with ease two loaded barges, each of seventy tons burden, but the canal board ob- jected to its use on the ground that -‘the undulation of the water from the paddle wheel action would have the effect of washing away the banks of the canal.’” Try a want ad. in the Herald-Re- view. \ Strength of Crocodile’s Jaws. Sir Samuel Baker, in his book on wild beasts, says that the power of the jaws of a crocodile is terrific. Once he had the metal of a large hook the thickness of an ordinary tel- egraph wire completely bent together, the barbed point being pressed tightly against the shank and rendered use- less. This compression was caused by the snap of the crocodile’s jaws when seizing a live duck which had been used as bait, the hook being fastened beneath the wing. On another oc- easion he found a fish weighing sev- enty pounds bitten clean through as if divided by a knife. This again was the work of the snapping jaws of a crocodile. A Frenchman, Paul Bert, once made experiments on the strength of a crocodile’s jaws by means of a dyna- mometer. He found that a crocodile weighing 120 pounds exerted a force of 308 pounds in closing his jaws. The lion has an enormous jaw power. Shortly after the railway companies abolished the pass privilege a certain United States senator who had held his office many years and had carried a pass all that time boarded a train for Washington. A farmer by the name of Wilson residing on Piney, four miles weft o Dickson, came to town to-day bringing with him the stuffed hide of a bul snake which he killed in his neighbor hood recently, and which measure: six feet in length. This is a species of snake rarely found in this section, but a rather remarkable feature is that when one is found it is always a large one. Tht serpent takes its name from the bel lowing sound it emits when angry which is very much like that of a bul when bellowing. There are numerous superstitions con nected with it, one of which is tha it lies in wait in wood sand pasture: for milk cows, and when one of tht latter approaches it springs upon her securely entwines itself about her legs so that she cannot move, and ir this fashion proceeds to suck her dry It is further said that a cow thus at tacked will ever afterward give ¢ bloody milk.
