The Conqueror of the Forests of the North will Soon Have Passed Away. A FINE TRBUTE TO HIS. WORTH. The Onward March of Civilization Supplanting Lumber Jack with Another Class of Different Occupation. Following close on the heels of Lo the poor Indian came the lumber Jack whose mission it was to fell the forests and prepare the way for the husbandman who would subdue the soil. Now the conquest of the con- tinent is almost over, the triumphal march of civilization from the At- lantic to the Pacific is cqgmplete, the telegraph and the railway have turned months into days, and the van- ishing forests admonish us that soon Jack and his glory will alike have departed. Who tnat has seen him ip large numbers on our northern streams fare forth from his wangan at break of day with a bateau fleet and armed with pike and peavey, do battle with willful and truant logs along the shore, riding them as a cowboy would a broncho, bas not recalled the pic- tured naval warfare of Greeks and Roman in their galleys of long ago? And he has been as brave and served the world as well as they. Ulysses never heard siren song so sweet and mournful as the sighing of the forest, and the riches of the Golden Fleece were as nothing to the riches Jack has brought to the pine barons of our land and time. But the world moves on and he must go. And he may sing with By- ron to his own true love, “Though the day of my destiny’s over, And tbe star of my fate hath declined, Thy soft heart refused to discover The faults which so many could find.” The frontier that so long we have boasted has passed away, the Atlantic and Pacific are joined with iron bands, and soos will mingle their waters at the Isthraus. Nor has the conquest stopped at continental bounds, but the nations of earth sa- lute our stars in oriental skies. So we must bid adieu to the pioneers, to Kit Carson to Daniel Boone. and te our own long-loved and stil! iinger- ing lumber Jack. Buta few years and bis spiked shves will bite our walks and paths no mure and ihe sawdust will be swept from our par- lor floors forever, And it will be another world when he is gone. Fur oot then can the delinquent debtor say, “Sust charge this up on the books if you will, Till I happen agin ip town. For I’ve nary a cent nor a dollar bill. But I'll pay when the logs come down.” Nor will our language be eoriched in the future asit has been io the past by these step-children of the forest whose very profanity seems to fertilize our mother tongue. New conditions require new words to ex- press the feelings aud emotions, and therefore it is in the lumber and mining camps and among cowboys and pioneers that the ears is most often struck with vigorous words of local mintage. And so we regret your yving, Jack, for you've been with us long and served us well, and ‘tis ill that we can spare you even now. Aad it isn’t for the size of your laundry bill that we say this, for most of your washing is dove with your clothes on you must know, but we like you for your human uature and your gentle ways, and the spirit with which you ride the roiling. bucking critters on the drive. Yet when all is said we like you dest because you’re not a nine spet but always Jack, and first officer to the king.—Bede’s Budget. Why Not State Work? Why not state work? Why should not every man or woman, with two hands and a willing mind, have work proportioned to his or her strength? As much work as desired, and always food, shelter and clothing in return? Think itout. In these days we hear of a lot of men who want work and food. Asif there is not. and should not be, always an abundance of both. There is an abundance of both. Work—which means things to do to make old earth productive—is e the ocean of air around us. We reath the latter, when we feel the need, and we ought to have work as freely. It is the existing of men and wo- men in communities—their coming together in crowds, and living shoul- der to shoulder, that has made the problem of work and proverty. jmunity? i Why should not the community proyide (365 days in the year) oppor- tunity to work-work at living wages? It is never more than a question of furnishing the tools, and: land is one of the chief tools. Work produces things of value, and those who took the state’s offer of work would create the food, the clothing, the shelter which they need. There would be no real tax upon the thrifty. There is not any question of ‘“pauperizing” the community. There is no com- petition from a lot of people who are exchanging their work for the neces- sities of lite. There is no tax, or barden from a number of people who the tools. The tools may be land and farm implements: they may be ledgers, or planes and saws, a work- shop, a broom factory, a road o which to pound stone, or a warm room with some yarn and knitting needles in which an old lady may sit and knit mittens. That is all a mat- ter of detail. The point is this: The state—the community—the city, county, or nation—ought to raise the tirst cost or tax on the whole com- munity. and then furnish tools—set up the farm, the shop, the place to knit, and be ready at all times to dis- pense—not alms, but a chance to work, Let this work’ be for wages, and let the profit go to those who make it. This is the only enlightened way to deal with this growing and always present problem of the needy. ‘There will always, in a community, be the weak, thriftless, the unfortunate. Something that is always With us ought not to be faced as a temporary emergency. It should be solved as we solve the problem of a city’s drainage—by a public tax, a public expenditure of the money raised, on a harmonious, logical and complete plan—a plan devised to meet the need. If this be socialism—communism— then welcome both. It is sense.— Duluth Star. For Sale.
