Mention in the last issue of the Herald-Review of the approaching municipal election caused some talk and consideration of candidates. Ex- President George Riddell has been approached by a number of citizens who have urged him to head. the ticket. He has thrice been elected and each time discharged the obliga- tions of his important office with credit alike to himself and to the village of Grand Rapids. Mr. Riddell, his friends urge, is not a radical and does not consider himself endowed with all the brains in the community. He is always ready to listen to the counsel of others who are equally in- terested with himself in the welfare of Grand Rapids. He has proven himself worthy the confidence of the people through three terms as village president. His past experience has served to better equip him for further public duties. His known ability as a presiding officer and impartial treatment of all classes of citizens is advanced as reasons for his election on March 10, 1908. Mr. Riddell nas not yet decided to become a candidate and is rather inclined to lay aside the proffered honor. He would be a hard man to defeat. Councilman A. C. Bossard could be re-elected should he consent to again allow the use of his name. He takes the same keen interest in the affairs of the village as a councilman that is manifest in the management of his private business. Mr. Bossard 1s a desirable man to retain on the coun- cil. There would be reason to regret his retirement. Councilmen Leroux and Root have each served with credit during the past year. They have been very active in making public improve- ments of a substantial character, and have been careful to see that the pub- lic money was judiciously expended. Whether these. gentlemen sill be candidates for re-election the Herald- Review has not been authuratively advised. Al Roeckerhas also been mentioned asa candidate for councilman. He has been a resident gf Grand Rapids for a number of years, is interested in tbe upbuildiug of the village aud would make an excellent member for the council. Recorder Yancey, who is now com- pleting his first term, is undecided as to whether he will again ask the en- dorsement of the voters. He has served ably, both as a member of the council and as recorder, and has a host of warm friends who would like to see him continue in his present position. James Doran has annouuced his de- sire to be elected to the office of vil- lage recorder, and in all probability will be a candidate before the voters. He is a young man in every way qual- ified for the position. John McMahon, the present village treasurer, will very likely be a candi- date for re-election, and as he is gea- erally recognized as a young mano well equipped by training and personal fitness for the office of treasurer, it is not probable that he will bave any opposition. Lhe election of a township board of trustees is another matter of no little importance and should not be over- * looked until the last moment. PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAVINGS BANK]. Encouraging Interest Shown Since Establishment of This Useful System Two years ago, with the aid of the First State bank, the Public School Savings bank was establishedas a part of the school system. At that time it was but.an experiment, and none thought that it would proye so satis- factory as the last report of the First State bank seems to indicate. This department of the public school sys- tem has been on trial for the past two years and during that time near- ly three hundred children have de- posited their small savings \in it. Most of the depositors have not with- drawo a cent of their deposits. Of those who have withdrawn their de- posits many have left town or are among those who have had less than a dollar in the bank. Herewith 1s Number having between $1.00 $5.00 on deposit ... The largest amount deposited by one child in two years ... i Total amount to the credit of 150 de- positors Total amount to credit of those hav- ing less than 31.00 .... 11.9% Total umount of money on deposit: — Jan. 31, 1908 Amoant withdrawn since organiza- tion : Grand total of deposits since organi- zation of bank... Ae - $1,843.15, The above statement is evidence of the success of this enterprise. This department should receive the cordial support ef every pareht in the com- munity. No one can overestimate the practical value .this department of school work will be to these young people if the habit of saving thus he- gun is encouraged by their parents. The work needs the encouragement of parents as much as any department of the school, and without direct pa- rental encouragement this enterprise of the school canin no sense be effect- ive in its usefulness. During the past few months there has been a decided falling off in the deposits. The deposits of a month at the present time do not exceed the weekly deposits of a year ago. There can be no good reason for this state of affairs, and it would seem that the ones whoshould be most interested, the parents, are becoming indifferent to the value this department of school work is to the child. We believe the usefulness of the School Savings bank is such and the value of con- tinuing it as a part of the school sys- tem sufficiently urgent to merit the cordial support of every parent in the community. A good start has been made in this work. and every en- couragemeént should be given it to make it worth while to continue it asa part of the school system, and increase its helpfulness in deyeloping habits of saving and thrift on the part of the young people of the town. In reporting tothe auditor, Sheriff Hoolihan turned in his total gross receipts for the year. Out of this sum must be paid the services of his several deputies and all traveling expenses, which leaves his individual compensation actually less than sume of the other county officials.
