Herald-Review August 3-17 a BY DICTATES QF CONSCIENCE Gen. Gordon Went Unarmed Through War in China. In some reminiscences of Sir Fred- erick St. Johu. a diplomatist who served his ccuntry (England) well, we have the facts which prompted Gen. Gordon to carfy no weapon but a cane when leading the imperial troops dur- ing the Tai-ping struggle. “When acting in conjunction with the Chinese, general, San-ko-lin-sin, against either Nankin or Foochow, Gordon received a message from the rebel leaders offering submission if their lives were guaranteed. Having obtained the consent of the Chinese commander, he agreed. The town sur- rendered, and the three rebel chiefs appeared before San-ko-lin-sin. He, seeing that they had not shaved their heads in sign of submission, had them decapitated on the spot. Whereupon, exasperated beyond control by such treachery, Gordon armed himself with a revolver, and was hastening to the general’s tent with the intention of chastising him in the most summary manner for his breach of faith, when suddenly he paused, and coming, on reflection, to the conclusion that his contemplated act was simple murder, he threw away his weapon and regis- tered a vow, that. so long as he re mained in China, he would never again carry any weapon more formid- able than a cane.” iS NOT A “BRAIN FOOD.” Idea to the Contrary is Proved to Be Fallacy. Fish is credited, even by educated people, with specia! properties that it cannot be truthfully said to possess. Chief amongst these is the idea that fish is par excellence a “brain food.” Dr. Hutchison traces the origin of this fallacy in the following way:—Bunch- er, the great philosopher, laid down as a vital principle the dictum, “Without phosphorus there is no thought.” This is half truth, as, although the brain is known to contain phusphorus, it has yet to be shown that an increase of the amount of phosphorus taken in the food benefits the brain in the slightest degree. Agassiz, the naturalist, who was informed by Dumas that tish was rich in phospherus, came to what he thought was a legitimate conclusion when he promulgated the statement that fish was a “brain food.” It will thus be seen that this popular impres- sion, which has been repeated and copied countless numbers of times, is without foundation, and is yet another instance of thousands of people being misled through someone having that ' little knowledge pvhich is so danger- ous.—Sanitary Record. FISH Ancient Injunction to Apprentices. No new thing is the servant prob- lem. Here is an. injunction to ap- prentices issued by the English Court of Common Council in 1527: “You shall constantly and devoutly on your knees, every day, serve God, morning and evening, and endeavor the right practice thereof in your life and con- versation. You shall avoid all evil company; and make speedy return when you shall be sent on your mas- ter’s business. You shall be of fair, gentle and lowly speech and behavior toward all men. And according to vour carriage expect your reward, for «md or ill, from God and your Republic Is Ungrateful. When the last census was taken in France the mayor of Montriat, in the Tarn, thought he would save his townspeople trouble, so he filled up the papers himself. Reflecting that France is threatened with depopula- tion, he added to each family a boy here and a girl there, and occasion- ally a pair'of twins. He increased the population of Montirat on paper about {100 souls. For this an ungrateful government has taken his office from him. Highly Prized Ciubs. There is a kind of rock called green- stone, found in New Zealand, of which the natives make beautifully carved, clubs. These clubs are precious heir- looms, and very rarely indeed do they leave their owner’s family. Lord Roberts received one as a present from a chief, and counts it among his most prized treasures. "| How to Tell Generous.Husband. In some parts of Siberia a bride- groom, on arriving home, commands his wife to take off his boots. In one is a whip, and in the other a purse. The contents of the boot she first selects for removal presage whether he is to be generous or the reverse to her. A very kind husband will put a purse in each boot and omit the whip, to make her believe that her
