Several Acres of Granite Separated From Its Bed by One Charge. fhe expansive force of compressed air is employed in an interesting way by a North Carolina granite company. On a sloping hillside, composed of granite which shows no bad planes, but splits readily in any direction when started, a three-inch bore is sunk about eight feet deep and the Bottom is enlarged by the exploding of half a stick of dynamite. A small charge of powder is fired in this hole, which starts a horizontal crack or cleavage. Charges increas- ing in size are exploded until the cleavage has extended over a radius of seventy-five or one hundred feet. Then a pipe is cemented into the bore and air is forced in under a pressure of from eighty to one hundred pounds. The expansion of the air extends the cleavage until it comes out at the surface on the slope of the hill. A sheet of granite several acres in extent may thus be separated. Money Value of Politeness. The attitude of too many public servitors seems to be one of hostility toward the public. Manifest indispo- sition to answer perfectly proper youstions is shown. I have no doubt they will soon be seen here. It’s likely their stay will be short, however, for the authorities | and the temperance people will surely be after them. Four -of the kind of bonbons that were sent to us would make a pretty stiff drink of absinthe, and an innocent customer might get laid out cold before he knew it. Putting the Boys to Shame. A good deal of alleged humor has been expended on the inability of wo- man to drive a nail. But, like so many stories of a similar character, the nail- driving tradition has been severely damaged. Only the other day at a gathering at Derby, Conn., the girls beat the boys in a nail-driving contest, and beat them badly. Then to empha- size their superiority @ne of the girls carried off first honds in the shot- putting contest, another girl defeated the ablest boy swimmer and still an- other girl ran fifty yards in :073-4, which wasn’t record time, but was fast enough to leave her boy competitora behind. was the trouble?” asked the | Th esting free books “How to Casting,” and “Fine Fishing fish and The minutes of the last meeting were then | township 53, rang 24._ The motion was second- , ment of highways in townships 148. 149 & 150, | call at our store and get the int the best tackle to use.
