Freeman and Miss Elizabeth Carroll were united in mar- riage at the home of the bride’s brother, W. W. Carroll at Alexandri-«, Minn., on Saturday, Juve 15, Rev. Frederic Garland of Sauk Centre read the Episcopalian fharriage service in the presence of the immediate rela- tives of the contracting parties. A wedding breakfast followed the cere- mony after which Mr. and Mrs. Free- man left for Duluth where Mr. Freeman will teach in the Normal school during the summer. They will be at home at Grand Rapids after Sept. 15th. SENTENCED TO HARD LABOR The plan suggested by County Commissioner King and adopted by the board, under a law passed by the d legislature, whereby county prisoners may be sentenced to hard labor when found guilty of misde- meanors, is already being put in force. During the past,week Justice Huson turned over six men to the authorities with a proviso that they be put to work on the streets or else- where, according to the resolution adopted by the county board. They e Joseph O’Brien, George Smith, Tom Husled, Ed. Thompson, for being drunk and disorderly, each received punishment to the extent of ten days each. John Brady, ten days for vagrancy. Don M. Scanklin, a professional piano player in dance houses, was fined $25 and costs for a misdemeanor. Last Wednesday evening he accosted a lady at Village hall while the lady’s husband was purchasing tickets for the show. The husband made com- plaint to the marshal, who arrested the fellow, The fine and costs were paid by friends of the accused. SUPT. McGUIRE REMAINS HERE W. M. Liggett resigned as dean of the agricultural college of the uni- versity at the meeting of the state f regents last week at the university and E. M. Randall, a member of the board and secreta ofthe Minnesota State Farm asso- iation, was elected as his successor. in Liggett gave ill health as the se of hisresignation. Theregents uccepted the resignation but ap- pointed him superintendent of the periment station at this place. Supt. McGuire of the Grand Rapids station was appointed as assistant in agriculture to the experiment station at St. Anthony Park. Mr. McGuire will remain iu charge of the station at this point until next October. following his appointment to the position of dean, E. W. Randall at once tendered his resignaaion from the board of regents to Gov. Johnson, who attended the meeting of the board. The governor accepted the resignation but did not announce who would would be appointed to fill the vacant place. LARGER THAN HERETOFORE The Duluth Normal school opened ‘Tuesday for its sunrmer course of twelve weeks with more than 125 students present. Nearly 75 more are expected and this will make the attendance ever larger than had been anticipated. The faculty for the summer school were all on hand, the classes organized and the first reci- tations were held Wednesday. Besides President Kohannan the faculty will be as follows: H. C. Strong, civics and history; Jesse Hub- board bard, physics and chemistry; Herbert ! Blair, botany, geology; L. W, Kline, pschology and pedagogy; E. A. Free- man, mathematics. Commissioner King moved that the as- sessed valuation of the LaRue mine be re- duced from $466,667.00 to $350,000. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Passard and carried unanimously. bp. R. Commissioner Passard moved that the sum of $150.00 be appropriated from the county road and bridge fund to be expended under the direction of Commissioner King in the improvement of the Deer River-Ball Club road. The motion was seconded by Commis- sioner King and carried. Commissioner King moved that the petition for the establishment of a highway known as the Wirt road be rejected. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Passard aud carried by a unanimous vote. It being the time and place set for the hear- ings upon the Oaks road, Vermillion road and Goodland-Feeley road, the: same were taken under consideration. The committees appointed to examine the proposed location of said roads, us referred to in the orders of sppee none made and filed on the 3rd da; of May, 1907, presented their reports in which they recommended that the prayer of the etitioners of each of said petions be granted. he reports of the committes were then con- sidered by the Board and an opportunity was given for the hearing of any protests that might be offered or damages claimed by any person ie reason of the laying out of said roads. There being no protests to the granting of any of said petitions or damages claimed by any person by reason of the lay- ing out of said roads. Commissioner King moved that the prayer of the petitioners of each of said petitions be granted and that said highways be hereby ordered established according to the committees’ reports. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Pas- surd and carried by a unanimous vote.
