COMPLETING NEW WARD SCHOOL The finishing touches are being put onto the new ward school, and as it nears completion the beauty of the interior of the structure becomes more apparent. Contractor Decker has encountered many obstacles in the way of his work. Mechanics have been hard to get at any price; d equally hard to get, and as a result the building will be opened for school] purposes nearly a year later than the original contract called for. The delay, however, was unavoidable and the schoo! board took cognizance of the fact that Mr. Decker was do- ing the best he could under the cir- cumstances. The new pbuilding wil) be one of the handsomest in Grand Ra when the surrounding grounds have been put in order. ITASCA CEMETERY IMPROVEMENTS iC Considerable work that was much needed has been done on the grounds of Itasca cemetery under direction of the cemetery association this spring. The grounds have been cleared and se and 120elm and evere green set out. Secretary Kremer of the association says the work of giving the cemetary proper care from now on will be kept up. FARCE COMEDY IN JUSTICE COURT The preliminary hearing in the case of the state vs. David Cocharne, charged with murder in the first degree, has been continued through- out the week in the cross examination of Mrs. Allen Whitt, the state’s principal witness. The hearing has now lasted eight days, and if eyer,a force was carried on in open court, this case should draw the capital prize in that role. Spear, attorney for the defense, has kept the witness under cross examination day after day, scarcely touching the subject of the murder. His aim seems to be to put on record a mass of imma- terial evidence that in some particus lar may confuse the witness at the on the main points. Nothing new has been brought out since Prosecut- ing Attorney Thwing turned the witness over to Spear a week ago. ELECTED NEW TOWN OFFICERS F. L. Buck of Hill City has concluded to become a resident of Itasca county, and as a beginning he was acrew of mep at work clearing land and getting ready to put up a farm house, barn,” etc., on this side of Pokegama lake at the ferry landing. Mr. Buck has secured 130 acres of fine hardwood land at this point which has about a mile of lake frontage. It is his intention to clear the tract up as rapidly as possible and make of it a model farm. He will also build a cottage for ocevpancy by bimself and family and he _ will become a permavent resident of Itasca county. P. P. Scott, who has been with Mr. Buck for some time, has charge of the work now being done on the premises. E. L. He has brought a large number of settlers into this succ county and northern Aitkin county | anew set of books for the Koochi- ceing county register of deeds office, finds that the task is much greater than was at first anticipated. Miss Crouse has had much experience in abstract work and thoroughly understands the details of the office, and when she has completed the set of books on which she is now at work Koochiching county will have as neat and complete a record as any county in the state. A force of about seven young ladies have been engaged on the work since February 11,and the end will not be reached until sometime in October. It is now estimated that about one-third of the copying has been done. There will be a total of about twelve thous- and instruments to transfer to the new records. Miss Crouse is very proud of the work thatis being done by her care of assistants and speaks iv flattering terms of their proficiency. Last week the force transcribed 712 instruments. ST. M. McAlpine was re-elected foreman for the ’steenth time, to which honor he strenuously objected. He has made a faithful and efficient fireman, however, and the boys objected to -his retirement under the desability act. Mike is one of the liveliest members of the cumpany, is generally first at a fire, and his services have been too valu- able to permit of his withdrawal. F.
