Baker was down from_ Deer River Friday on a business mission. Mr. Baker says times are fairly ively in his town. ‘The saw mill is again runnitg at its Tull capacity day and night. Mr. J. P. Sims returned to Grand Rapids Tuesday noon and will spend a few days at Hotel Pokegama and at the Jake, where his daughter and son- in law, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Mather, are enjoying an outing, George Cowan, aged forty-five years, who resided in the west end of town with his family, died last night trom the effects of a rupture. ‘The re- mains will be sentto Muskegon, Mich., this afternoon for burial, Wm. Larkin of Mankato, aged 62 years, died at Bovey last Saturday. ‘Lhe remains were taken charge of by the local order of Odd Fellows, of which the deceased was a member, and shipped to Mankato, James Hewis has gone to Deer Rover to open a barber shop. He is a first-class workman and a good musi- cian; a deserving young man who will fast become popular with the good people of the juaction town. County Auditor M. A, Spgng_ re- ceived a twenty-foot yasolene launch Weduesday morning and put it into the water at Cohasset. Launches are becoming more numerous than row boats on the lakes hereabouts. Miss Honora Sutton, sister of Mrs, L. W. Huntley, and formerly a teacher in the Grand Rapids schools, is here ona visit. Mi-s Sutton has just con- cluded her labors as instructor at a term of summer school at Hallock. Geo. A. Fay writes from Deerwood. Munn., requesting the Herald-Review be sent to him at that place. Mr. Fay is with the Oliver Iron ‘Mining company and is evidently doing some operating in the new district, Mrs. E. J. McGowan and Miss Suste Mooney were passengers to Duluth Wednesday afternoon. Muss Mooney has been in ill health for some time past, and will receive treat- ment at St. Mary’s hospital in Duluth. She was considered a very sick child at times, but under the care of doctor and nurse, she 1s believed to be out of danger. Miss Jennie Doran, daughter of Mrs. Catherine Doran, was sized with hiccoughs about 3 o’elock ‘Tnesday afternoon and was not relieved until 11 o’clock at night. At times the affliction was so severe that her condi tion was considered dangerous. ‘The big | with attending physician, however, finally succeeded in overcoming the trouble. Olson of Northome, Repub-— ican candidate for sheriff of Itasca tounty, has been in Grand Rapids a couple of‘days looking up the politi- cal situation. Mr. Olson says he will get a much larger vote right in Grand Rapids at the coming primaries than he had exp:cted, and that he has every reason to believe that he will receive the nomination of Ins party. Ole has served as deputy sheriff of this county, Mr, F. B. Gladdin, editor of the Floodwood News, was a_ visitor to Grand Rapids Monday last, and a pleasant caller at the Herald-Review office. Since taking charge of the News Mr, Gladdin has “improved the paper editorially and 1s also adding to the mechanical equipment in a ver substantial manner. prosperous town, made up of an en- terprising class of citizens, who will support a good local paper. A, Freeman of the Grand Rapids schools, was in town Wednes- day and Thnrsday, coming here from Argyle where he had just concluded a summer school term, Mr. Freemati said he had a very successtul term with an enrollment of ninety-one and a regular attendance of over eighty. The home of Hugh Lane on west Sixth street was nearly destroyed by fire last Sunday evening about nine o’clock. ‘The loss is estimated at $800 with an insurance of $800 -on the building and $200 on the furniture, written by the H. E. Graffam agency. Ralph Lane occupied the house. No one was at the home Sunday evening and the origin of the fire is unknown. When the alarm was turned in the fire department responded promptly but could not learn from the Central tele- phone station where the trouble was located and a delay of five minutes gave the fire a good start before the boys reached thescene. ‘The building was not a total loss. There should be a law making telephone companies responsible for such negligence. Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Schwartz ot St. Paul- are visiting with the family of E.N. Remer. Mrs. Schwartz is a sister of Mr, Remer. Mr. John Kemer, father of E. N. and W, P. Remer is also here from St. Paul to spend the summer. Bernard of the Northwestern Editorial association to the effect that the proposed outing for this year has been abandoned owing to the fact that only a few of the papers. of the district would be represented. This is to be regretted as the gang would certainly have had a good time while in Grand Rapids. No.Room For Debate. The Grand Rapids Independent gives us its reasens why the county4 should not be divided—that the men who are promoting county division area bad lot of grafters, that they broke faith with the citizens of. Mr. Hawley has been offered the management of the Willard-hotel at that place, The Willgrd is one of the best known hosteleries inNorthern Minnesota, and the ownefs of the property, the Potter-Casey company, are fortunate in securing’the services of so competent a man as Mr. Haw- ley to tuke the management of it, He is a gentleman of wide experience,in the hotel business arid in every way well qualified to make a -deeided success of the undertaking. Mrs. Hawley will act as housekeeper, and for that position she is well qualified. It is with deep regret the West Duluth Catholics hear the announcement, as he is much be- loved by his congregation.
