DRAINAGE OF SWAMP LANDS The following article, taken from the Duluth News-Tribune, gives a good idea of the general plan of the bill for the drainage of government lands introduced in the national house by Congressman Steenerson, of Minnesota: The Muluth News~Tribune has re- ceived fron A. G. Bernard, of the Minnesota Drainage league, a copy of Congressman Steenerson’s drainage bill. It is framed along the lines of the irrigation bill and covers the re- | claiming of the swamp lands of Ala- SOPSSSSS SOS SOS SSG OS SSO SOOO GOSS SOOO O SO GOGORS bama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Lowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mis: ippi, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. It is estimated that in these states there are $100,009,000 acres of govern- ment swamp lands that can be re- claimed by drainage that are now worse than worthless, as in the south- ern states they are breeders of dis- ease, and everywhere are preventing the proper developmen of adjacent lands and of the scattered high lands included in the ar ‘The acreage is as large as the states Indiana, [llinvis and Iowa, with some of the smaller eastern states thrown in for good measure. Over 5,000,000 acres are in Minnesota. 1b is not probable that this bill will become a law at this session. It wouid be remarkable if it did, as it took eight years to pass the ir bill, But it will become a law has more merit than the reclaiming of the arid Jands, as after the drains age system is once perfected, the expense of maintenance would bea minor matter compared to irrigation, and the lands reclaimed, as a rule, would be of unusual richness, being largely of heavy muck and vegetable deposits. Mr. Steenerson, however, has al- age through an appropriation of $15,000 fur a topographical survey of reservation, which must first be drained before the ad- jacent territory can be freed of its overflow. The general drainage bill provides that all the receipts from government the states named shall be expended for drainage purposes, except such amounts as have already been appropriated for educational and other purposes. This iucludes the amount annually to about $500,000, the fund, if the bill passed this year, morrow, Easter Sunday.
