Early Maturi We have fowls that mature at very early age; yet, when we con sider what has been done in other lines of live stock as to early matur ing we see that there are great possi bilities in the matter of early matur ing of fowls. Consider the pig of 5¢ years ago, which matured in 18 months and the pig of to-day, which matures in 9 months; op consider the steer that used to mature in three and a half years and now matures ip twenty months.. It will be seen thai we have not done as well with our fowls, though wé have improved the early maturing quality. Yet in their natural state the common fowls ma ture at six or seven months of age We have brought them to the point where they mature in five months We should be able to reduce the time of maturing to three months. That is, a hen of the Plymouth Rock o1 Leghorn breeds should be matured enough to lay eggs at three months of age, and without doubt that ené will be attained when we get the breeding of fowls down to the indi vidual proposition. . Up to the present we have done our breeding. mainly by flocks, thus being able to only partly follow our own breeding operation: and to determine results. I expeci to live to see breeds of hens that be gin laying eggs at three months o: age. Results may be obtained mor¢ quickly in the breeding of fowls thar in the breeding of any other class 0: live stock. John Brand. the attention she should. On the very large farm the poultry business is dwarfed in comparison to the larger scale of operations, and we have not learned yet to manage _ successfully fowls when kept by the thousands The small farm too has advantages oj market facilities that the large farm has not, on account of the little farm more often being found in the vicinity of cities or villages where the land is high in price. Too Heavy Eggs. I have read that fowls that lay heavy eggs are to be preferred to those that lay eggs of only medium weight Well, that is all right if the eggs are to be used in the home of the person that produces them. But if the eggs are to be sold in the general market are. produced in larger numbers. If eggs are ever sold by weight there will be some sense in raising fowls that produce large eggs. Oats come nearer than any other grain to being a balanced ration for fowls, but its hull is against it as a steady food, especially for chicks. Fed tn conjunction with other foods, oats _jare excellent. The census reports compiled by the government in 1900, before the agita- tion regarding the “beef trust” began, throw considerable light on this ques- tion. It appears from the census that the packing industry is conducted on | a smaller margin of gross profit than any other industry in America. The gross margin of profit of 871 flour and grist mills in Illinois, in the census year, was nearly seven per cent on the volume of business. The gross margin of fifty-one wholesale slaugh- tering and meat packing establish- ments in Illinois was only about one- third as large, or a little more than two per cent on ths volume of busi- ness. The millers oe, not been accused of .being in a “trust,” and combina- tions would seem impossible in a busi- ness where there are several thousand mills in the United States competing | actively for the fiour trade, but it ap- pears that the gross profits of the mill- ers are larger than the grc profits of the packers. it may turn out that the agitation regarding the packing industry will show the same result as the devil found in shearing. the pig: “All squeal and no wool.” — American Homestéad.
