Tidbits of News ~ for a Scandinavians NORWAY’S NEW PREMIER. Michelsen’s Risé Has Been a Rapid One. P. C. K. H. Michelsen, the new pre- mier of Norway, has come to the front with unusual rapidity. Hardly more than two years ago he was a business man in Bergen, and in that short time has been elected to the storthing, held a portfolio in the ministry, and called by the prince regent to form a minis- try. Now he is the strongest man in Norway and a world figure. It is true that he had a seat in the storthing in 1891, and although recognized as an alert, active and independent young man by his colleagues, he attracted no particular attention. He withdrew from political life in order to devote himself to his business interests, which had grown to considerfable propor- tions, but kept in close touch with his party and was returned to the stor- thing in 1903. : Michelsen was born in Bergen in 1857 and prepared for law at the Uni- versity in Christiania, taking the exam- ination in 1879. He practiced law in his home town, but gradually became interested in shipping, eventually be- coming the largest vessel owner ib Bergen. Early in his career he took an active part in local politics and held various positions. After his election to the storthing in 1903 he was called into the coalition ministry by Prof. Hagerup in Febru- ary, 1904. After remaining in the min- istry barely a year, first as a member of the council of state in Stockholm and later as minister of finance, he re- signed because the ministry was pro- ceeding too slowly with the settlement of the controversy between Sweden and Norway over the proposition for a Norwegian consular service. Then the whole ministry resigned in order to give Crown Prince Gustaf a free hand. Premier Hagerup recom- mended that either Mr. Michelsen or Mr. Schonning be invited to form a new ministry. The advice was acted upon, and Mr. Michelsen promptly ac- cepted the invitation. His policy, as is well known, is to proceed at once to establish a consular service for Nor- way independent in every respect from Sweden. The ministry consists of Jergen G. Lovland, minister at Stockholm, who will have associated with him as coun- cillors of state E. Hagerup-Bull and H. Bothner; Gunnar Knudsen, minis- ter of finance; Gen. Olsson, minister of defense; A. Vinje, minister of agricul- ture; Councillor Wexelsen, minister of church and education; S. A. B. Are- Yander, chief of department of com- merce and industry, and K. D. Lem- kuhl, chief of the department of pub- lic works. Mr. Michelsen himself takes the portfolio of justice. It is to be taken for granted that the whole min- istry is in accord with the premier and that there will be developments in a short time. LAST OF COLONY. Survivor ‘of Ole Bull Colony Dies in Pennsylvania, A few days ago Ole Olson, the last survivor of the Ole Bull colony at New Bergen and Oleona, Pa., died at the age’ of 87. His éeath removes the last representative of that impractical scheme of the hardy Norwegians who in 1840 went into the wilds of Potter county, led by the famous violinist, Ole Bull, and a year later, driven out by starvation, scattered to various parts of the United States. Oleson was one of Bull’s closest friends, and when a majority of the colonists accused the great violinist of cupidity, Oleson stood up to defend his name. Oleson re mained at Bergen, and he and the two old log houses built by the colonists, for many years have been all that con- nected the past with the present. SUFFRAGE IN SWEDEN. Government Seeks to Force Passage of a Vicious Law. The Bostrom ministry hopes to pass its proposed suffrage law through the riksdag at the present session. There is desire for the law among the peo- ple as though nominally supposed to extend the rights of suffrage, the measure is so continued as to retain the present minority government in control of both chambers. In a recent debate the government Was accused by one speaker after an- other with not keeping faith with the riksdag and the people. The promise of a law to extend the electoral fran- chise, by which several votes had been obtained for the new army law, had not been fulfilled, as the measure pro- posed was a deception. They Live Long. Of European nations, the Norwegian and Swedish are the longest lived and the Spaniards the shortest. According to a foreign statistical concern recent- ly published, the average duration of life is as follows: Sweden and Nor- way, 50 years; England, 45 years and 3 months; Belgium, 44 years and 11 months; Switzerland, 44 years and 4 mdhths; France, 43 years and 6 months; Austria, 39 years and 8 months; Prussiz and Italy, 39 years; Bavaria, 36 years, and Spain, 32 years and 4 months, the Earth is 1,400,000,000.
