DEFECTIVE PAGE ON PRACTICAL Sup’t McGuire of Northeast Exper imen Press Bulletin No. 41. , If there is any one thing in fara- ing for which northeastern Minnes sota has the advantage over other sections of the state it is in the grow- ing of clover. During the past eight nae clover has failed but once on the Experiment/ Farm and that due to winter killing, never failing to the same suc of 2 tons per acre the tirst: cutting aod from to 14 tons the second cut- ting. For this reason meadow has not been permanent, Lut, always plowed up after the second year. Experiu have been con- ducted allowing the-meadow to run a lounger périod: and always with tke pote results: that after the second year “the crop sown decresses to au uuprofitable yield. This is a point upon which too much emphasis can- not be laid. Wild hay duce a paying crop for several years in suecession bub tame hay will not. While this seetion is especially favor- able for fame hay, it will give a protit- able return oniv when rightly cared for, In parts of the sta where fields are Jarge the farmers may be bette crop, bub here where every acre of cleared land has cost much time and hard work it should be farmed so Ws realized each year. Clover roots stidom live thru the second winter, and while timothy lives longer the sod gets ous ef con- dition ater the secoud year so that it will not give a protitable yield. While clover seed is high priced the expense of reseeding every other year may seem considerable but the diier- ence in yield and tife improvemeut if the soil for other crops wore than off sets this expense, Tie svetem of rotating the mead w land with other crops Will be Cakeu Up dater ina seric of bulletins on general tar ment, Numerous vari ties of gr: manag es have been tried but thas far nothing bas been found to cqual common red clover and timothy for hay, Bromaus, a grass much auvertised has heen tried, but not with conclusive resalts. The same may be said of Alfatta. The experiment with both these plants will be continued — Alsike clo- ver is very good for low jand where standing water at certain seasons of the year would kill out red timoth dn such case tay be usec but the jand culliveted secured, asture: The Experiment Warm pasture has chiefly been the uncleared part of the farm. of which there is suill about 209 ac This has been the ouly permanent pasture, no tame grass as yet being used for that pur- pose. Much of the second crop hay ou the medow daud has been pastured with very good results. This last year a meadow hat had been allowed to clover or Isike clo A permithen’ meadow, betore a cateh can be stand for the third year was used) for a night past for the cows with Very satisfactory results, . pasturing purpose tame, hay land might be used the third y a much better advatage than for hay. In tact it is only for pasturing that it should ever be kept the third year, ve not had conclusive experiments with white clover and Kentucky blue grass for permanent pasture. Both white clover aud blue grass are very prevalent in parts of this section, growing year after year with perfect hardiness. Where a eatch can be made ina wood land pasture they make a vers valu nble improvement upon the wild grass, especially on upland. The catch cannot be made howeyer by simply scattering the seed upon the wild sod. The under brush has to be cub out aud the sod brokea toa certain ex- tent. Just what amount of cultiva- tion Is neccessary has not yet been determined, but work along this line will be taken ap the coming year. Last spring seed was sown without any cultivation bat no catch whab- ever secured. The next bulletin will be upon fodder carn and roots as a feed for stock. A. J. MeGuine, Northeast.
