He was late in reaching that city as his mother passed away the day before his arrived, on the 6th inst. Death resulted from two opera- tions for appendicitis. ‘The following obiuary is trom the Austin Daily Herald: Many there are in Austin who will remember the deceased. especially as a little gil and young woman. She was born in Fremont,,Waupaca county, Wisconsin, forty years ago last July. She came to Austin when nine years ot age. Here she attenteded school and grew to womanhood. She will be recalled.as-a bright and companion- able girl and young woman. She was twice marned, her husband, to- gether with one son survive her. Her home was in Grand Rapids, Minne- sota. She visited im Austin jast sum- iner and about two months ago went to Milwaukee to visit her two sisters residing there, About a week ago she underwent an operation for appendi- cius from the effects of whicn she} died. She leaves two brothers, A. N. of ts city, Hebert of Colorado Springs and two sisters Mrs. Simon Alderson and Mrs. Fred Wright, both ut Milwaukee. August Johnson, the mercant tailor tsina position at the present time to give extraodinary satisfaction in making men’s clothes This is usualy a quite season in the tailor- ing line. It is just between winter and spring. Perhaps a little early for spring orders and a little late for the winter rush. sBut Johnson must keep skilled workman at all seasons und must manage to keep them busy. Por this reason it will readily be seen that prompt service will be accorded ali orders placed at this time, and as a special finducement he is making prices tbat will surprise vou on the very best: quality cf goods. He can afford todo this just now and he is deing it. With a large stock of goods on hand— goods that cost thousands of doilars—he must keep the wheels of industry revolving. After the holidays Johnsor will begin his an- nual visits to the lumber camps and from Uthat time until late in the spring his shop will be a busy place. Ky having your measure taken just now you will Lave the advantage of selecting from a complete stock and the assurance that prompt and satis factory service will be given. ‘This is a quiet tip to the public that! should not be overlooked by swell! dressers. on The Dry The Mississippi Valley Lamberman has the following comment on condi- tions wow prevailing in northern Minnesota: ‘The present condition of the weather gives rise Lo appreben- siou lest the country dry up and blow away. The reports from the northern part of Minnesota say that the country is very dry. The winds which lave prevalled during the past six weeks have removed the moisture from the ground aod tke fallen tim- ber. The leaves are whisked about as so much brown paper. The evapora- tion has been very intense ia some portions of the north, and the woods are as dry as they ever were in warm weatber. There are some nortious of the northern part of the state where the snow fall covers the ground t» the depth of several inches, but Lhese areas are not extensive. Where there is no snow the country is one vast tinder bux, and serious forest fires are not berond a reasonable probability. In the ureas where the woods are pot so dense the tempera- ture hag been suflicient to freeze down to a considerable depth, and the fall of snow on top of this has rendered it easy for logging opera- tions. Where the forests ure dense the frost has not peretrated suttici- ently to warrant the undertaking of logging operations. ‘The atmosphere, however, bas been dry and the evapo- yation sufficient to dry up much of the water complained of earlier in the sengou,” : [Tbe followingis @ portion of jan address delivered ut Village hall lust summer by Rev. Curl D, Thompson, und is published by request, The address is tov lengthy to admit of its publication in the Herald-Review in one issue, but it will appear in installments.— EDITOR HERALD-REVIEW) [Continued from lust week] Socialism is not hostile to Christian- ity or religion: No, those who say that socialism is atheistic or thatit ; will destroy Christianity do not tell the truth-about it. We have been very careful to declare that so far as socialism is concerned religion is a private matter and we have no inten- tion or necd tu interfere with it atall. | Furthermore socialism is the only possible programme left to us by which we can realize the ideals of Jes He stood for justice. “He was | the friend of the poor and oppressed and formed the laboring ¢ of his time in their struggie fur justice. So did Moses who went into Egypt to help 3,000,000 slaves to get their freedom and so did the other prophets, every one of them were leaders of { mighty historic movements, that were the struggles of the poor, the laboring class for justice. Jesus came to bring the world toa life in whieh the golden rule should be the law. Our present life say “do others or they'll do you” and do it quic It is the denial of Jesus., He came to bring the kingdom of God on earth and taught us to work that the will of God may be done on earth as it is in Heaven. To us then socialism is the political part of the programme by which humanity is to terminate the ruthless tyranny ‘Of private monopoly, abolish poverty and greed and the enslave- ment of little children and the prosti- tution of woman, wipe out intem- perance, stop war and briug peace on earth, ‘To us socialism is the-logie of Christianity. We turn now to the definition of | socialism, aud I would say: Fi Socialismis first ofall a philes- ophy of history. Itstarts outa study | of the history of human society and it discovers that the social order is | and al has been in process of progressive change. That histor began with the masses of mankind in chattel slavery. When economic con- ditions changed serfdom arose and then as the invention of machinery cameanotier social evolution resulted and capitalism, the present form of society, arose. And now we discover in the present situation the beginn- | ing of a stili further change. The present tendencies of soviety are bear- ing us on to another, a different and better social order. This fact of social evolution is the last, best word of science, it is the first word of social- ism. We frequently meet people who say: “Itl always been this way and it always will be this way.’ But it witl be Shown Lhabthis is quite untrue and quite uuscientilic. ‘The study. of society reveals’ the process of evolu- tion-already at work. Socialism is’ at this moment giving birth to anew social order. Capitalism is pa away aud socialism is being born. [Continued next week. | ——— es Notice for Publication.
