Early last Monday morning: 2 fire occu red at Nashwauk im which three lives were lost. M. D. Kerr, Charles Chessler and Rose Kelly were the Victims. Wm. Reynolds and a woman with whom he lived are now in jail charged with the commission of the crime. The News Tribune gives the follow- ing story of the fire as related to them by their correspondent. ‘The verdict of the coroner’s jury called to investigate and inquire into the cause of the deaths of M. D. Kerr, Charles Chessler and Rose Kelly, who lost their lives here early Monday morning, by the burning of a honse of ill-regute at the cutskirts of the village, was that the parties met death from suffocation and burns caused by a fire set. with criminal in- vent by William Reynolds and other persons now unknown. The jury which was composed of T. R. Dodsen, James Hays, W. A. Gor- don; Matt Amundson, Eric Johnson and W. A. Kiley, was in session all day yesterday aud did not complete its labors until after 10 o’ciock last night. Under direction of George H. Spear, of Grand Rapids, prosecuting attorney of Itasca county, in which county Nashwauk is located, a most searching. investigation was conduct- ed, and the authorities are contident ,they have in charge the man guilty of the crime. Dr. George D, A. Rus- We | sell, county coroner, and Timothy Mahan, deputy sheriff of Grand. Rap- ids, aud W. S. Ryder, undertaker of Hibbing, assisted. uke county attorney in searching the ruins of the build- ing, and in remuving the bones of the burned peuple. Cuunty Attorney Spear soon after the burning, and after hurriedly looking into the affair caused the arrest of William Rey- nolds, proprietor of.another house of ill-repute. William. McCune, a musi- ;cian at the place, and ‘Theodore Neff, ‘the bartender, and. two others, who were subsequently released. ‘The re- sult of the investigation by the coruner’s jury warranted the holding of Reynolds aud his woman, known. “Chicago. Mag,’? and they were- taken by way,of Hibbing this morn- ing to the county jail at Graud Rap- ids, where they will be held usttl the ‘date set for the preliminary hearing »which. will follow the examination Joseph Garrison in township 64.north, of range 2: ‘Theodore Neff, the bar- tender, is also held, and is now in the jail here. The evidence brought against Rey- nolds.was that at the time of his-ap- prehension, shortly after the burning of the building. his clothing was wet, asif. be had passed theough under- brush holding moisture from the-re- cent raiu. His hat was damp and thereon were found a number of bal- sam needles and fragments of leaves, Fsuch as. might have been gathered from a trip between his place and the burned building shortly after a rain storm;. a gasoline can, with wet leaves attached,. was also found, aud ‘tracks leading from. Reynolds’ place to the: burned building and back were found. ‘The inmates of Rey- nolds place teil confiicting stories. The woman “Chicago May,” declared before the jury that Reynolds was not out of the house-at any time dure ing the nighi of the tive, while others stated that he left the house ababout 3.0’clock aud they did nut see bim return. It is thought that Neff, while not directly implicated in the crime, knows more tnan he has yet told of the affair, and it is even hinted here, that when the time comes he will tell all he knows. The house which was burned was built a year ago, and was a fraine structure covered on the outside with tar paper. Foratime the place was conducted by aman named McGuire, whe last fall- closed, it up; and it was vacant until, Jast week, when Ruse Kelly. and her sister Meda Kelly took possession and re-oponed it, and it is alleged that when Reynolds heard of the place starting up he remarked that it would not last long. Rey- nolds, who is a new. man here. re- cently rented from Theodore Neff the place he was running at the time of, his arrest. All that remained of those who lost their lives in the fire were sent to Hibbing by Undertaker Ryder, where the funeral will be held, Chess lar has two brothers, employed ono the Drake & Stratton work at the Stevenson mine, and they will give their erring brother decent burial at Hibbing?’ The incident has caused consider- able feeling here auc it is more likely the village authorities will close up the Reynolds place and drive the people outof.the county. arrived | ANOTHER NEW | Split , Vauce. ..
