Estimates of the amount of timber that has been lost in the driv- ing streams differ especially where both white and Norway pine have been driven down to the lake or down the rivgr to lower mills but I see that somebudy has placed the amount at five per cent of the total amount put inthe water and I guess thatisa In disvussing the industry recently started in the Northwest of raising these sunken logs or ‘‘deadheads” one of the prominent lumber journals says that when work was begun not long ago, on the construction ofa bridge over the Mississippi river at Minneapolis, it was found out that the bottom was paved with logs. In excavating fora caisson for a pier in a space of 12 by 60 feet, 63 lugs, scal- ing 7,000 feet buard measure were re- moved. Itis argued that while the whole bed of the Mississippi river is not likely to be covered with logs to such an extent as in the instance mentioned, there are undoubtedly millions of feet of pine stuck in the mud, only part of which will ever be recovered. The river has been used for driving loys for the past fifty years and.every season has witnessed the loss of a large amount of timber. Oh the Mississippi as well as many of the other logging streams in the Northwest in the past years the boom company that has charge of driving the lugs has gone after some of the deadheads, hauled them out on the bank todry and then sent them to the mill, but no organized effort has been made to go into that sort of business on a large scale. Itis likely that some of the logs that might be brought up from their many years’ resting place at the bot- tom of the river would bear the marks of lumber companies that long Since passed out of the trade in this section of the country or which have passed into other hands. “The idea of raising 1ogs from the river beds and manufacturing them ata profit, into lumber, is a prac- ticable one,” saida local lumber manu- facturer, “but is is ptetty safe to say there will be no general cleaning up of the rivers until the log driving industry ceases to be of the import- ance that it is even at the present WHO HAS EXCLUSIVE ] SALE Hibbing Minnesota, for road and bridge purposes and theelerk be instructed to certify such levy to the county auditor of Itasca county at once. implements.
