In a lengfhy petition to the honor- able secretary of the war department the citizens. of Grand Rapids and Itasca courty pray that the govern- ment reservoirs be no longer man- aged in a manner that must inevitably result in the destruction of our pres- ent prosperity. Interference with the natural flow ot the Mississippi river will suspend all manutacturing indus- tries at this point and the damage to our people therefrom would be incal- culable. The petition was drawn by Hon. C. C. McCarthy and is signed jby eveyone to whom it has been presented. As is the custom, the home team will be re- quired to pay the expenses of the visitors andas the expense will be quite heavy it has been found neces- sary to provide ways and means to raise the necessasy-funds. The young ladies of the High school will give a supper at Village hall this afternoon and evening beginning at 5 o’clock and continuing until all have been served. We are authorized to assure the public that an excel.ent. meal will be served for 25 cents. ‘Ihe public is invited to be the guests of the young ladies this evening. DEATH OF J. P. BENNINGTON. Former xesident of Grand Rapids Passes Away at Bemidji. Word was received in Grand Rap- ids that “Grandpa” Bennington was dead. ‘The deceased and his wife had resided in Grand Rapids fer a num- ber of years and were known to nearly all our citizens, and were the friends of all who knew them, While the death of “Grandpa” Bennington was not unexpected, as he had been a great sufferer for several years past, yet the announcement caused a feel- ing of sadness among the friends of the family. The following is taken from Monday’s Bemidji Pioneer: “Yesterday morning at his home in this city occurred the death of J. P. Bennington, a well known and highly respected resident, after years of pa- tient suffering of tuberculosis.. The deceased had been a resident of Be- midji for some time and his death will of age and was born in Maryland, Hé is survived by a wife and family of four grown up children, three of whom, Mrs. John A. McDonald, Lewis and Russell Bennington are re- spected citizens of. this city. Mrs. Wm. Johnson, a daughter is a resi- dent of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
