Draining the Swamp Lands. ‘Much of the land in the Red Lake and White Earth Indian reservations, which is to be opened to settlers on November 10, is elassed on the gov- ernment plats asswamp. This does not mean that itis valueless. Some of it is on comparatively high ground, while a considerable portion of the | balance could be easily drained and thus made valuable for agricultural purposes. Of course the drainage scheme would require a large ex- penditure of money, and it is doubt- ful if it could be handled under the state drainage law, the stggestion ; has been made that an appeal should be made to congress to provide the means for reclaiming to the public this valuable tract of land, * This is an excellent idea, and no time should be lost in starting the movement to secure an appropriation by congress for this purpose. Oon- gress has providel for a comprehen- sive scheme of irrigation forthe arid and semi-arid states, and there is no sound reason why it should not pass a law also for reclaiming the swamp lands in this state thatare being opened to settlement. Congressmen Bede, Steenerson and Buckman, in whose districts these lands are sit- uated, should give the matter early attention. They can do nothing which woald be of greater benefit to Northern Minnesota.-Duluth Herald. Contest Notice. Department of the Interior. United States Land Ottice, Duluth, Minno- sota.
