Under the auspices of the Grand Rapids Lyceum bureau, Mr. Herbert L Cope, one of the most widely known and popular humorists appearing today before the public, will be in Grand Rapids on the evening of Oc- tober 4th. Some time ayo a number of opr enterprising citizens made ar- tangements with the Lyceum Bureau ments during the winter months. These willinclude lectures by emi- nent men, concerts by famous singers and musicians and humorous enter- tainments. The first of the series will be by Mr. Cope on the 14th inst. The people of Grand Rapids should appreciate the effurts of those who have made it possible fora series of such high class entertainments. In order to receive the several attrac- tions it was necessary to guarantee a considerable sum of money to the St. Paul bureau. It willdepend upon the liberality of our people in patron- izing these entertainments to meet the expense. The first evening’s [m St. Paul, foraseries of entertain- of Their Own In Itasea County. Bow String Club were filed with the register of deeds for St. Louis county the other day, says the Duluth Trib- une. Itis an organization composed of Duluth sportsmen, who have learned the delights of an outing in Itasca county. The Bowstring river and lake are the headwaters of the Big Fork river. It is in the heart of a wilderness abounding in big game, ducks in season and fishing. The incorporators and charter mem- bers of the Bow String Club are Dr. W.#H. Magie, D. M. Philbin, Alex McDougall, BE. M. Patterson, EB. L Fisher, E. H. Windom, L. C. Barnett, and J. B. Cotton. Dr. Magie is presi- dent, D.M. Philbin is vice-president, E. H. Windom is secretary and F, H. Patterson is treasurer. It was due to the persuasive powers of Dr, Magie and Mr. Patterson that the men named visited the Bowstring country last year. They fell in love with the place, and the result is the organization of a club. The taem- bers have purchased 58 acres of land amusement underthe auspices of the local bureau should be liberally pat- ronized. Mr. Cope has a style that iS particuliarly his own. He has torn apart the old style elocutionary en- tertainment and in bis original way built up a connected evening's enter- tainment of intellectual amusement that all can enjoy, combining, as it does, the literary quality we look for in the best lectures with that some- thing we all mean when we say: “We go out to be amused, nor to be in- structed * Acritic has said: ‘Mr. Cope has the rare faculty of being ex- tremely funny without insinuation or vulgarity or decending to the prov- ince of the buffoon. With a delight- ful contrast of the sublime and the iudicrous he develops rare entertain- ment outof the absurdities, incon- sistencies and excesses of human nature, taking his models from life.” Police Court Items.
