The secretary of the interior Wedne: handed down a decision ii the ¢ of Mrs. Nellie Lydick who has been fighting for title to half of section sixteen in the town of Cass Lake for a number of years. Mrs. Lydick secured the land by Indian alottiment, Settlers went on the property when the -reservation was opened up, erected buildings and asked for titles. The state auditor held that the section in question was school land and could not be atlotted. The supreme court holds that the Natale can have no school land in an Indian reservation, and Mrs. Lydick’s claim will hold, | The land is part of the townsite of the town of Cass Lake and very valuable. FRIGID WEATHER BOOMS LOGGING Present Cold Spell Has Proved of Great Benefit to Lumber Camps. The logging industry of the north- west received a decided impetuous as a result of the geverally cold weather, says the Mississippi Valley Lumber- man. The swamps have been frozen over aad it is now possible to con- struct ice roads. The fall of snow will not retard the cutting of timber and logging operations may be in full blast in another week. , Both the railroads and the various employment agencies agree that about two-thirds of the regular num- ber of men employed in the woods every year are pow abt work at their regular vocations. The securing of the other third will be a tough nut for the loggers to crack for the next few months as most of the help needed is skilled labor, such as head Sawyers, four-horse teamsters and top loaders. Men of this class are scareer than ever this year. Although there are a number of men who claim to have considerable experience in the iines now badly needed, thry usually fall down in a few days after they get up in the wvods. Skilled wondsmen earn this year all the way from $35 to $60 per month according to the nature of the work. Timber operators up around the Menominee river in northeast Wis- consin are extremely short of even the cheaper grades of labor, and have commenced to import men trom Chicago,. These men are usually in- experienced as to the work in the pineries, but the loggers are glad to get them and are paying them good wages. During the warm weather some of the loggers could not use their men and ‘had to let them go. This has ina minor degree stopped the upward tendency in prices paid for lavor. A Timely Suggestion. This is the season of the year when the prudent and careful housewife replenishes her supply of Chamber- lain’s Cough Remedy. It is certain to be needed before the winter’ is over, and results are much more prompt and satisfactory when it is kept at hand and given as soon as the } f That we have certain things to sell.
