A recent issue of the Chicago Record-Herald says that: the railroads of the country aré face to face with the greatest car and power shortage in their history. In spite of the rapid inorease in the size of the equipment of the various roads of the country, they have not been able to keep’pace with the more rapid growth in traffic ofiered. Expert traffic men have recently estimated thit the de- mand for cars to move the amount of business now offered is fully 50,000 in excess of the supply. Business is still on the increase and as the weeks go by, the shortage will become more and more’ pronounced, until it reaches a point where every freight yard and freight house in the country is block- ed with trattic awaiting transporta- tion facilities. So bad ¢has the situ- ation become that a sudden period of cold weather would — practically paralyze the transportation facilities of the entire country. ‘Traffic men are doing their utmost to relieve the serious nature of the Situation, but they are practically powerless to make much «change ‘for the better. The business of the country has prospered phenomenally and the amount of freight offered the roads bas grown to such proportions as to be startling when put into figures. During the past tw. years} the movement of freight has been enormous and no material decliné is probable for some time, if at alk During 1901 the roads handled 1,084,- 000,000 tons of freight and the esti- mated tonnage for this year is ,000,- 000,000. During 1901 the roads spent two hundred million dollars for new equipment and that will be exceeded by twenty-five per cent in 1902. A million and a half freight cars are im service, ‘pulled by. forty thousand locomotives, Seventy thousand freight cars were added to the equip- meuttluring 1901 and eighty thousand will be built this year. Last yeat the roads received a billion, dollars for carrying freignt and $36v,000,000 for carrying 600,000,000 passengers. The manufacturing concerns that make railroad equipment have been totally unable to meet the demands made upon them. ' Stepped Against a Hot Stove A child of Mrs. Geo. 'T, Benson, when getting bis usual Saturday uight bath, stepped back against a hot stove which burned him severely. The cbild was in great agony and his mother could do nothing: to pacify him, Remembering that she hada botule of Chamberlain's Pain Balm in the house, she thought she would try it) In less than halfan hour after were approved. | ena peing a goa fatelaads advertised eld in thé audifor’s, office, on motion duly made and carr: n adjournment was taken to Qctober 18th, 1902. ¢ Ni October 18th, 1902, Pursuant to a€journment the Board of County Commissioners met at the Auditor's office the 18th day of October, 1902.
