The Virginian Enterprise, one of the ablest Republican papers in this district, has this tu say of the Demo- cratic nowinee for congress: “The female woman who writes the ‘News and Comment’ colamn of the Duluth News Tribune notes, with a keennes; of perception and sagacity becoming to her sex and to the nationality of the name bequethed by her ancestry, that ‘Neither of the Republican papers published at Virginia seem inclined to make opposition bitter for Capt. M. L, Fay, their fellow townsman, who is the Democratic candidate for congress in the Eighth district.’ As one of the papers referred to The Enterprise will state that our course in the premises is guided by Republican principle only. In the selection of un opponent, the Republican press is assuredly exempt from biame for over-stepping party organization that the prime priuciples of Republicanism may be subserved. The position of Mr. Fay relative ty the tariff issue has beeu succinctly stated, aud is of a nature tended to win for him the suffrage and support of mauy con- servative Republicans. Aud none who enjoy an acquaintance with Mr. Fay doubt the sincerity of his positioa The Enterprise, as a Republican paper, is not the ouly factor in Republican politics on the Mesaba which does bot seem inclined to make opposition bitter for Capt. Fay; the truth of which Statement will-be fully proven | by range voters on election day.” ¢ | CAPT. FAY!S POSITION, Capt. M. L, Fay was a St. Paul visi- tora few days ago, and during his stop run up against a Globe reporter, judging from the following succinct States—can with safety be intrusted to the hands of this honest, fearless, H business man, this prince of God’s own noblemen, excerpts anent Capt. Fay and his candidacy: Bzlow we print a few statement of his position on matters of public import which will receive attention by the voters of the Eighth by the polls in November. “J. Adam Bede is to havea run fo for all his political money in the Eight istrict congressional race. Capt. Marcus L. Fay, of Virginia, the Democratic nominee, is prepared to make another campaign such as he put up for the nomination, and promises to make it more than inter- esting for the jolly Jadam. “Capt, Fay was in St. Paul yester- day on his way to Virginia. He is optimistic of the results in the Eighth District in November, and confidently expects to win over Bede. He realizes that he has a fight on his and rather enjoys a good scrimmage. As demonstrated by his campaign for the nomination Capt. Fay is a hustler and is undaunted by the heavy nor- mal Republican majority. Capt. Fay will not begin his stumping cam- paign until about Oct. 10th. Then he will make a tour of the district and pour hot shot into the enemy’s ranks day and night until the eve of elec- tion day. Heis backed by a@ strong committee and his organization work has been thorough, as are all things attempted by him. Oapt. Fay stands squarely for revision of the tariff, but he wants a revision that will revise, and has declared that he will, if elected, oppose any movement tended to put lumber and ore on the free while other commodities heavily in- trenched bebiud the tariff are allow- ed to enjoy undisturbed the advan- tages of protection. He believes that a revision of the coal tayifl would bring the coal-trust to tine, and will make that one of the issues of his \campaign.
