An Interesting discovery has reward- ed the researches of ofilclals at Hamp- ton Court palate, London, There has always lurked a suspicion that the wals of the famous Queen Anne's drawing room, which fs in the center of the east wing of Wren'’s famous building, contained.mere. than the sec- ond rate portraits of the Georges. Never however,’ was {t supposed then an im- portant work by thet onee famous dec- orative artist, Verr: had been con- cealed from the pubile eyo elnce 1735, owing to a stupendous ect of vandai- fsm, which, it is presumed, was car- ried eut by Queen Caroline in 1785, probably to prevent the apothests of Queen Anne from meeting her cyes in her drawing room when she becime queen. The date is known by the ex- tracrdinary act of the paper hanger of that time, who, in covering up Verrio’s work, scratched on his name and the date cf the paper bh ng. In taking down some. of t ritsjof the Georges, which were intended for Ken- sington palace, it waa noticed by an official that the tep right hand corner closed to the cellizg seemed abruptly cut off from the general scheme of the beautiful cefling, which everyone hed sec and admired, and which repre- sented Queen Anne tn the cherlot of Justice, dressed in purple Hned with ermine. Over her head is a crown, held by Neptune and Britauaila, while surrounding and fl: in the clouds are various allegor: nes repre-! senting Peace and Prenty, etc, The discovery now made shows that the whole of the walls were originally painted by Verrio in the sme manner, the subject being’ Queen Anne's apotheosis as Queen ef the Sea in the four great quarters of tho globe, MICE HAVE A STANDING IN LAW They “:gured in a Repent Contest Over Iand Ownership. From the Spokane Review: The lend-contest case in which a family doa prominent part hag been decided cn the appeal to Binget Hermann, commissicner of the gen- cral land office at Washington. The rodents are not menticncd ia the deci- ion, but the man whoin it was claimed lowed the mice to estab}ish a resi- dence in his bed is allowed to retain possession of his homestead, the rul- iag of the local land office being re versed and the contest dismissed. A peculiar feature of the case is that when the family cf mice was first men- tioned it was contended that their presence In the bed of the entryman argued an abandonment of the home- stead, and the local land office appar- ently took the same view of the mat- ter. But when the decision was ap- pealed from it was set up that the presence of the mice waz 4m argument in favor of the homesteader. Fred O. Grutt was the entryman, having taken up a homestead near Davenport three years ago’ Last August John O'Neil instituted a contest to the homestead entry, alleging that Gruit hed aban- dened the claim, did not keep up @ continuous residence thereon, end that the only inhabitants of the shanty on the ranch were a family of mice. After hearing the case the registrar and receiver decided that Grutt’s en- try should be canceled. From this de- cision Grrjt had sixty days in which to file an zppeal to the commissioner at Washington. The appeal was filed by Leo Walton, attorney for Grutt. In the appeal ‘the mice family was re- ferred to as follows: “If there were any mice in this entryman’s bed dur- ing the early part cf September, 1898, it plainly shows that the entryman did have a bed on the land at the time.” DULUTH, SOUTH SHORE B AT “...
