The board of county commissioners of Itasca county met in the auditor's office in the village of Grand Rapids at two o.clock p.m, pursuant to call. Roll Call—Commissioners present, Rellis, Buell and powers. The minutes of the last meeting were read, and motion duly made same were approved. The board thon proceeded to the selection of 72 names as grand jurors. Parsuant to adjournment the board met. Roll Call—Commissioners present, Brooks Rellis, Buell and Powers. A communication from the public examiner was read in which he referred to the amount to be allowed the publisher for the publication of the delinquent and forfeited tax lists. The communication was received and ordered filed. Edward C. Hainke made application for the cancellation of the 1899 and prior years’ taxes upon the sw of ne of section 20, town 54 range 24, upon the grounds that the same is government land and not subject to taxation. The application was accompanied by ‘he original entry receipt. Upon motion duly made and carried, the abatement was allowed and recommended to the state auditor for his approval, J.J.McDonald made application for a re- fundment of taxes paid upon lots 10 and 11 in section 7, town 53, range 22, for the years 1895 to 1893 inclusive. The refundment being asked forthe reason that the said described land was platted as the Plat of Swan River in the year 18M, and that the taxes had been paid upon the platted land for the years mentioned. The application was allowed and recommend- ed to the state auditor for his approval. C.A. Smith made applieation for a refund- ment of $11.56 for the amount having been paia by error twice upon lands in section 13, town 60, range 2 On motion duiy made and car- ried the application was allowed and recom- mended to the state auditor for his approval. Charles E. Leeman made application of taxes for the 1893 and prior years on w'% of nw, section 23, town 55, range 55, for the reason that said lands were government lands up to September Sth, 1893, and were not sub- ject to taxation, The application was accom- panied by a certified copy of the final receipt for the lands and upon motion duly made and earried the application was allowed and re- commended to the state auditor for his ap- proval. Osear L. Mather made application for the cancellation of thé taxes upon nw'4 se’. sec- tion 5, town 61, range 24 for the reason that the same Was government land at the time same was assessed. The application being accom- panied by a certificate from the United States land office, certifying that the said land had recently been scrip. The application was al- Jowed and recommended to the state auditor for his approval, The application of the Benedictine Sisters made by their attorney, C.C. McCarthy, Esq, for the cancellation of the personal property taxes was upon motien duly made and car- ried, cancelled, it appearing to the board that such property was exempt from taxation. Moved and seconded that the janitor be in- structed to secure assistance and make a thorough cleaning of the court house. Moved and seconded that the sum of $100 be appropriated out of the road and bridge fund for the cutting out and bridging ef the road recently surveyed at Split Hand. Said work to be done by Peters and Vipond, and the said sum of $100 to be paid when the work is prop- erly done and approved by the board of Com- | missioners. Commissioner Powers reported that several complaints had been made to him about a bad | spot in Prairie river road and as he under- stood it could be repaired at a small cost.
