Boston Special Chicago Tribune: A new scheme to defraud the banking houses of this community has been dis- covered through the ofiicials of the Massachusetts National bank. The of- ficials are assisting the police in this country and those of the Scotland Yard force in unravelins the matter. The manner in which it is worked is as fol- lows: A man enters a bank and pur- chases a draft, at the same time tell- ing the cashier that he is going abroad and would like to have a duplicate drawn, He takes both of the drafts away, and the original is either taken or sent to Europe by the swindler. Some bank in London cashes the origi- nal draft, and the duplicate is cashed | on the continent by some unsuspecting person, In this way the swindlers double their money. Paper issued by the Massachusetts National bank ws used by one of th indle secure $2,000 from a bank in Switzerland. The man who had the transaction wit the local bank told the cashier that he was going abroad and that he would like to have the drafts in two parts. He pur- chased two drafts cf $1,000 each. These were drawn on a London bank. Re- cently word was received from London that one of the drafts marked dupl cate had been cashed there. A few days ago a letter was received from a banking house in switzerland, stating that it had cashed the o~tginal draft for the party to whom Mi ad in- dorsed it. The cashier of the Massachu- setts National bank wrote to a bank- ing house in Troy. N. Y., and asked that institution to look up a man giv- ing the name cf J. P. Miller, who had bought the draft in March. The bank- ing house replied that it found three peopie of that name, all reputable bus- iness men. No one of the three an- swered the description cf ihe Miller who bought the drafts. The Switzer- nd bank will be the loser in this case, as the person who cashed the dvaft should have demanded the dup'!- cate as well as the origina! before cash- ing it. An Interesting Discovery. An interesting discovery has reward- ed the researches of officials at Ham- ton Court palace, London. There has always lurked a suspicion that tk walls of the famous Queen Anne room, which is in the cente of the-east wing of Wren’s famous building, contained more than the sec- ond rate portraits of the Georges, Never however, wes it supposed than an im- Portant work by that once famous dec- erative artist, Verrio; had been con- eealed from the public eye since 1735. owing to a stupendous act of vandal- ism,*which, it is presumed. was car- rie] out by Queen Caroline in 1735, probably to prevent the apothe: her drawing room when she became queen. The date is known by the ex- traordinary act of the paper hanger of that time, who, in covering up Verrio's work, scratched on his name and the date of the paper hanging. In taking down some of the portraits of the Georges, which were intended fcr Ken- sington pa’ace, it w26 noticed by an official that the top right hend corner closed to the ceiling seemed abruptly eut off from the gensrai scheme of the beautiful ceiling, which everyone had 3een and admired, and which repre- the ehariut of Justice, dressed in nurple lined with ermine. Over her head is a crown, held bs Neptune and Britannia, while eurrounding and floating in the clouds are various allegcrical figures repre- senting Peace ant Plenty, etc. The discovery now mafle shows that the whcle of the walls were originally painted by Verrio in the same manner, the subject being Queen Anne's apotheosis as Queen of the Sea in the four great quarters cf the globe. Heir to 6500, 00, Robert E. M. Cooper, formerly a prominent newspaper man and politi- cian, has fallen heir to $590,000. The estate was left to Coope. by John C. Crego, a miser hermit, who recently died at Cripple Creek. Years ago Crego lived in the Panhendle country of Texas. Cooper made a tour of that regicn. Crego was not inclined to make acquaintances, but Cooper found him about to drown in a river and | risked his own life to save the miser. That resuited in a friendship. Cooper ceturned to Springfield, Mo., and be- came prominent. respondence with Crego for some years but they finally lost track of each other. Crego left Texas and was a pioneer prospector at Cripple Creek. He cleaned up $500,000 and quit. There- after he lived in absolute seclusion. So far as he knew Cooper was stil] in Springfield, and a few days before he died he sent for Justice Martin, and a will was drawn up leaving everything to Cocper. Fire Department Chaplains, ‘The New York fire department is to be equipped with chaplains, just the game as a regiment of soldiers, The officials consider that it is as necessary to have chaplains at fires as it is to have them arcompany troops to the firing line in time of battle. Loss of life at fires is sometimes very heavy, as was recently shown here. There should always be sume one present to administer spiritual consolation, Fire Commissioner Ssanne! has appointed two chaplains far the department. They will hold the reux of chief of batallion, and will perform the same duties as chaplains in the army, in all cases ac- companying their battalions into ac- tion. The only distinction between ar- my chaplains and fire chaplains is that ' the latter will receive no compensation for their services.
