He reports the business fairly good up the line with good prospects for improvement. ‘The weather for the past week has been very sausfactory to the loggers, though there is not enough snow for hauling opperations ‘The nights are cold and the lakes and marshes are gradually freezmg hard. It 1s esti- logs are already on skids in the north- ern part of the state. Frank Richardson spent his Christ- mas in the Rapids, having secured a few days, vacation from his duties with, the Swan River Logging com- pany. He told the Herald-Review that Head Push ‘Tom Murphy was recently married in Duluth, but Rus. } Bennington and ‘Tom Shields refused to confirm the report. Jack Frost finally succeeded in get- ting at work ahead of the heavy snow storms thus putting the swamps and lakes into good shape for the founda- tions for work in the woods. ‘The prolonged warm weather made the | loggers fear-that snow would come be- fore there was any foundation for log- ging roads, but they can now go to | work with the expectation of getting out a good crop of logs. | L. W. Huntley, agent fer the Great Northern Railway Company at this} has, purchased the dray outfit, teams, wegons, sleds and_ business of ; J. M. Romans. No considerable hauling is being done in any section, but cut- ting and skidding are progressing well. ‘The railroads that have timber ad- jacent to the tracks are hauling newly cut logs. ‘The Swan river road has hauled already some 75,000,000 feet and the Deer river line some 40,000,- ooo feet to Mississippi water. An extracrdinary story is reporte from Komorn, in Hungary, - The-cfi cials of the municipality of Moesa, in the Komern Gomitat. are accused of having applied torture to persons im- prisoned on suspicion cf, theft. It seems that some time ago,the safe of the municipality was roubed of nearly 3.000 florins. Numerous arrests were made, but the thieves. were not discov- ered. It was then that torture was with a new born girl on Sunday, the 24th. Joe Dunning was in from camp yesterday. He finds no further trouble in securing all the men required, and reports.his operations as progressing yery satisfactorily. ; W. H.
