Six Months........ $1 00| Three Months.......50¢ Entered in the Postoffice at Grand Rapids, ‘Minnesota, as Second-Clags Matter, Official Px Itasca County and the ficial Paper Ot Ten parity Evidences, of Prosperity. Following are some extracts that are fair sampies of scores of similar ones that might be quoted: “The Union Bag and Paper earn- ings for the year are $1,890,000 net, being 7 per cent on both common aiid preferred stock. The American Steel and Wire Company is said to have earned $1,800,000 in October, an increase of $300,000 over Septem- ber.” “Railway earnings and every other trade barometer show the extension of good tines. With iron and steel shares in leadership the industrial list is likely to vie even with standard railroad stocks in a broadening mar- ket. No doubt exists anywhere as to the phenominal earnings which the iron and steel properties are piling up. Nothing like that record was ever before approached in industrial his- tory. 1 was shown official figures of the Steel Hoop company’s operations today, and the .exhibit far surpasses aught that Wall street has heard. Above every expense that company earned last month over $500,000, and net earnings for the present month are at a rate exceeding $600,000. It is difficult by any of the old standards to comprehend whit showings like these signify.” Is it possible that a farmer can be found foolish enough to doubt that this is an era of prosperity, and that he is a sharer in it? For 1s it not an economic axiom that in an agricul: tural country like this there can be no great and enduring prosperity unless farmers are prosperous? Hence the prosperity noted herewith must be an evidence of agricultural prosperity quite as phenominal. How is a tarmer going to get around this logic? He can’t, and therefore must conclude that he is prosperous, even if certain local symptons indicate a different condition. Trusts are formed for the philan- thropic purpose of reducing prices of the things they manufacture. ‘That the trusts referred to in the foregoing have reduced prices we call as wit- now is “calamity howling,” and there- fore it is only proper to say that such centralization is all mght, for it is put- ting the wealtlt of the country in the hands of those who know how to make the best use of it,—Farm, Stock and Home, PARK BUILDERS. Propose a New Treaty With the Indians to Further Their Scheme. The park builders have arranged the. following program: ‘An entirely new treaty to be nego- tiated with the Chippewa Indians of Minnesota will soon he proposed. “Those who are in favor of this proposition say that it will, if agreed upon, end the continued controversy between the Indians, the government aad the lumbermen. “The principal features of the pro- posed new measures ate here out- lined: “First—The enactment by congress of a law vesting the intenor depart- ment with full power to negotiate and treat with the various bands and tnbes of Minnesota Indians, for the purpose of outright purchase by the govern- ment of all lands on either ceded or unceded reservations. “Second—The secretary of the in- terior shall further be empowered to suspend, pending negotiations, all operations under the Nelson act of 1889, under which the timber lands are now being disposed of. “Third—The appointment by the president of the United States of a commission to treat with the said tribes of Indians, to the end that all their rights, titles and interests to auy and all lands in Minnesota may be transferred back to the federal govern- ment. The fund to be paid by the United States for such lands to be placed in trust, and the interest to be paid annually to the Indians. “Fourth—In all cases where allot ments have been made the Indians are to hold the same, provided they improve the lands and show a dispo sition to cultivate the same within two years after occupying. “Fifth—The establishment by the United States of a national park on serve a portion, ,at least, of the vast nesses fencing wire, nails, farm ma- chinery and everything that iron or steel enters into, and also paper. Of course, there is a belief that prices for these things have advanced, but there must be some mistake about it, for farmers are getting no more on an average for their products than before the alleged rise of prices for other things, therefore if they have to pay more for supplies and get no more for their products they could not be pros- perous; but they are prosperous, h¢nce prices of their supplies have not! ad- vanced; this is surely as clear as mud! But how do the trusts make earnings that amaze Wall street, even, if not by Increasing prices? easy—by saving! That’s what the trusts say. Here is a pointer for farmers: Quit work and go to saving! lf it works with trusts why not with farmers? a A word about the last sentence in the quotations: It is not difficult to comprehend the significance of the earnings of one trust reaching the enormous sum. of $600,000 in a sin- gle month, and another three times as much! It signifies a concentration of the wealth of the country in a few hands that was once regarded a_ fatal national disease. But to call it so The answer is pine forests of Northern Minnesota, rhich are fast being denuded. Mark Hanna’s Style. Whoever writes the interviews which are credited to United States Senator Marcus A. ilanna should take some pains to make them fit the man. A stout, peppery, brusque man who has not enjoyed the blessing of a strictly classical education, such as Mr. Hanna, for instance. would never think of saying to a reporter: “It would be an ungrateful thing for me to discuss whether or not I will accept another term as chairman of the Republican national committee. It would be audacious to discuss an offer that has not been made,” de would state it in this way. “What, me resign the chairman- ship? Don’t you believe it, young man. _ Somebody has been stuffing you. “I'll quit when my time is up and not before, and you can say that for me in your paper, if you like. And you can say, too, that I don’t believe Henry C. Payne or any one else. ever said I was too sick to hold the job. Henry nor anybody else would talk of me like that, unless I told them to. No, sir! I have got into this thing and I’m going to see it through.” Now that- would sound more like Mr, Hanna’s style. It would fit his physique and newspaper readers would feel more satisfied that it came directly from the distinguished senator—Globe WHEN GoiNe East: INQUIRE ABOUT THE SERVICE AND RATES OFFERED BY DULUTH, SOUTH SHORE & ATLANTIC RAILWAY ‘YOU WILL FIND A Fast LiMiTED TRAIN PERFECTLY EQUIPPED WITH MODERN SLEEPING ‘AND DINING CARS RUNNING OVER A SMOOTH ROADWAY AND MAKING DIRECT CONNECTIONS FOR ALL POINTS EAST. = COO800O2800K% Oc eoneccoeoens T.
