E. church. Mrs. George F. Kremer, returned on J uesday last, after an absence of several weeks with friends in Michigan. Harold P. Cochran has accepted a position at Hibbung, where he expects to be gone all winter, Mr. and Mrs, W. P. Nisbett, of Grand Rapids, Mich., are here ona visit with W, P. Nisbett, Jr. George McAlister, of the Auditor’s office, went down to Swan River the past week on business, returning the same day. ‘Charles Miulaney, returned from Cass Lake, on Tuesday, Mr. Milaney representing Strauss Bros., clothing, Chicago. County Attorney J. R. Donohue returned on Thursday from St. * Paul, where he had gone on business i connection with the Leeman case. R. C. Carroll, foreman of the state horticultural farm at Hamline, has been the guest of Supt. Chapman, of the state farm, the past week. Shenff Tyndall is a bachelor this week with the care of a family on his hands, as Mrs. ‘Tyndall is visiting in Carlton. W. E. Martin, the real estate and pine land buyer, returned ‘Tuesday trom a business trip to Minneapolis. Mrs. B. C. Finnegan and her chil- dren are enjoying camp life at Winne- bigoshish dam with Superintendent Maddy and tamily. Sid McDonald, at one time a resi- dent of Itasca county, but recently of Minneapolis, died at the latter place of consumption. John Cable, of Iwo Harbors, who has been here on a visit to his uncle S. J. Cable, returned home Tuesday, accompanied by his cousin Guy, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Doran re- turned from Royalton. Wis., where they had been on a visit to Mrs. Doran’s old home. Prof. E. ‘f. Carroll’ has returned from Argyle, Minn., where he had been the past two months, in the em- ploy of the state as conductor of the summer school there. Mrs. L. R. Witt, Duluth, and Miss H. Witt, Minneapolis, who have been the guests of W. H. Andrews, at the Pokegama hotel, returned to their homes on Tuesday. There will be two union services held on Sept. 3. Service in the morn- ing will be in the Methodist church, when Dr. Forbes will preach, and the service in the evening will. be con- ducted in the Presbyterian church. An amusing incident recently oc- curred in one of the branch stores of a great English grocer .and provision dealer. He has so many clerks that some of them do not even know him by sight. It was one of these latter. who called his attention to a fine specimen of poultry as he was walking through one of his stores, and the clerk was so earnest and adroit in ex- tolling his wares that finally the cus- tomer ordered it sent to his residence. When the address was given the en- ergetic clerk, and he found that he had been pressing the goods upon his own employer, he nearly had a fit, but soon recovered upon being informed that his assiduity had earned him an ocrease of pay.—Ex. o [First publication August 5.)
