Mis Espie McLennan, of Bemidji is here vu a visit to friends. Mrs. James Haywood, of Vermilion js visiting her. mother, Mrs. K.C. Lent. Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Powers were among the Sunday passengers to Duluth. W.L. Maddy, of Winmbigshish dam, was in town for several days this week. Dave Cochran and family have re- moved to their summer home at Wabana lake, Mrs. Wade Blaker and daughter Gertrude, will leave Monday, for Ft. Scott, Kansas. Rigister of Deeds A. B. Clair 1s buying a considerable amount of pine timber these days. Cashier F. P. Sheldon of the Lum- bermen’s bank returned Thursday from a business visit to Bemidji. James Chisholm came down from the Deer River district today where he has been doing some cruising. F. A. King and family went to Duluth Sunday. Incidentally the children were taken to the show. R. H. Blakie, who had been keep- ing books tor the Porter & Seelye com- pany during the past year, is in town. Mr. and Mrs. A. Woods went up to Bemidji this week and made final proof on their Beltrami county home- stead. M. L. Toole returned Monday, from a trip to his old home, Mechias, Maine. Mrs. Toole will remain there for the Summer. J. C. Poole, a prominent hardware merchant of Eveleth and Biwabik, visited here this week with L. W. Huntley and family. A. A. Kremer. who has accepted a permanent position with ‘I uller & ‘Terpening at Deer River, spent Sun- day with his family here. George Arscott has accepted a position with a government surveying party which will be engaged in this county tor a couple of years. Miss Emma Paulis, who for the pest three weeks has been visiting her sister, Mrs. J. F. Stevens, returned to her home in Farribault, Sunday. Mrs, F. R. Slocum left Monday on avisit to friends and relatives at Spokane, Wash., and Portland Ore. She will be absent several months, * Jim Mahon, who has been laid up for some time with a most severe attack of rheumatism, is now impriov- ing somewhat and his friends hope to soon see him again walking erect. Logging operations for the coming winter already begun to make a str among the several firms. J. H. Dunning has commensed preporations for work on Balsam, where he will op- rate two large camps. Mrs. W. E. Neal and two children, who have been stopping at the Pokeg- ama for some time, returned to their home in ‘Northfield this week. Mr. and Mrs. Neal wi!l make Grand Rap- ids their future residence after a few weeks, Register or Deeds A. B. Clair has bought a half interest in the logging puttit of Commissioner W. E. Myers. These two gentlemen will make a pretty strong logging firm, and the Hearald-Review wishes them abund- ant success, Backus & Brooks, the. lumbermen, are buying everything in sight in 60- 24. Last week they bought the claims ot J. C. O’Connell, Sandy Owens and Napoleon Russell, ‘They haye aman now in that section making estimates and are prepared to take all the timber offered. Word has just reached Grand Rap- ids ot the marriage of Henry Seelye in’ Minneapolis. The happy event took place several weeks ago, but somehow the genial groom forgot his Grand Rapids friends in the distribu- tion of announcement cards. The Prairie river bridge has been repaired under the supervision of Commissioner Myers. The work was approved by the committee. The total cost was $154. Henry Weed will bid good-bye to hisGrand Rapids friends tomoirow and willl eave for Rush City where he will engage in business. R.C. Little, the popular represen- tative of the Duluth Shoe company, was selling goods here this week. Bob always does a good business in Grand Rapids. The village council transacted busi- ness Thursday evening. Among other business disposed of was the passage of a resolution calling for a special elec- $16,000 for the purpose of taking up the floating indebtedness of the corporation. ‘The election will be held on August 15. Public sentument appears to tavor the proposition, and it will very likely carry with little, if any opposition, Mrs. Percy Brooks was here from Deer Riyer Thursday. C. W. Assistant Roadmaster McDonough of the Hibbing branch, who 1s tem- porarily relieving Mr. Gibson, was here Wednesday, The board of county commissioners held an adjourned meeting yesterdvy, at which a_ resolution was passed ap- propriating $2000 to be used as bonus for the establishment here of manu- facturing enterprises. School Board Meeting. At the school board meeting held on Monday last, the following teach- ers were elected to teach during the next term: Pnncipal, Prof, E. T. Carroll; Miss Julia O’Connor, Min- neapolis; Miss Margaret Doran, Miss Hattie Gibson, Miss Chink Cleveland, Mrs, A. F.
