BVTBVVUVWOTOVEEA W,; J. & H. D. POWERS. MARKET AT DEER RIVER. A national park or forestry reserve association for the governmental -pre- servation of over 7,000,000,000 acres of land in‘Northern Minnesota will.be formed in Chicago this month. ‘Lhe organization starts with the cordial iudorsement of Governor Theodore Roosevelt of New York; President Hill, of the Great Northern railway; Col. John S. Cooper of Chicago,‘and prominent congressmen and_ ygovern- ment officials interested in tbe! im- mediate creation of great national reserves for the preservation of na- tive forests and streams and the per- petuation of the game of the land. The Minnesota -project is made doubly important thruugh the fact that the friends and promoters of the reserve have also in view the placing under governmental charge all of the that cannot be surpassed anywhere else. This is the region of the coun- ties of Crow Wing, Aitkin, Wadena, Hubbard, Beltrami and Itasca. Itis the continental divide for the waters ot Hudson bay, the. Mississippi and the St. Lawrence, with an elevation ranging from 1,300 to 1,500 feet above the level of the sea. Once in the wilderness, the party will be provided with guides, taken to established hunting and fishing camps, conveyed on tours of explora- tion, be given every opportunity to personally inspect the tract which it is proposed to preserve forever after as the sacred ground of the Father of Waters, and a park to which, under governmental. regulation and disci- pline, the people of the nation may come when they will and be free with nature in her primeval state. Following the formation of the as- sociation a plan of campaign will be mapped out by which congressmen and government officials may be con- vinced that such a furestry or ua- tional park reserve is a necessity and should be secured before the pillage of timber plunderers and the waste of timber fires have ruined the land... When this campaign has commenc- ed and is fairly under way the Great Northern. Railway company will is- sue invitations to the congressmen of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois Acording to the Austocrat of the Interior Department. Secretary Hitchcock of the interior department. 1s reported to have said in interview the other day, relative to the Cass: Lake. towngte controversy: “The land is not open to scrip entry If there 1s any color of title anywhere out side the government, it is vested in Nellie Lydick, who made an allotment entry under the existing faw. At the next meeting. it: be corrected and repassed, with -per- haps some modifications as to the ter- ritary included. e.te ‘ It is estimated that there are about two hundred wheels used fn this vil- lage, and a move is on foot to forma local organization of the riders for their mutual benefit. Several paths are projected in different directions leading from the village. Some fig- uring has. been done on a proposed path to Pokegama-lake. It is said that only a comparatively small sum of money would be required to make the run from here to Allin’s landing first-class. A meeting was. held at Village hall, last evening of cyclists and a permanent organization was perfected by the election of H, D. Powers us president, Sam Moran, vice president; D. A. Mackenzie, secre- tary and treasurer; Will O'Donnell, captain. There were forty-five names enrolled, and it is expected that more than one hundred will appear at the next. meeting to be held on Wednes- day A constitution and _ by-laws were adopted. It will be the aim of. the new. organization to work in harmony: with the.village authori- ties.to prevent violations of any ordi- nance that may be: made -relating to riding on sidewalks, etc. The move is acommendable one and should be encouraged. Promiment Men Coming. . Hon. D. M. Gunn isin receipt ofa letter from Col. John. S. Cooper, of Chicago, in which the writer assures Mr. Gunn that a party of prominent gentlemen, who are interested in the proposed ‘national park in Northern Minnesota will certainly visit this section, early in October. and will stop at Grand Rapids.as their headquart- ers while they remain. Among those who are already. listed for the trip are President..McKinley, cx-Presi- dent Cleveland, United States sena- tors, congressmen, ~governors:. and prominent men interested in forestry from all over .the country... Grand Rapids will be equal to the occasion and will acquit. herself in the usual becoming manner. A Considerate Burglar. - “A Chicago. paper says truly that fiction has nowhere. in its pagesa scene more thniling or pathetic .than that of the Brooklyn burglar, who found a baby moaning in its crib, waked its mother, helped care for the suffering child, and then went forth, leaving his gathered plunder at the boby’s. side."—Ex. Perhaps the aforesaid burglar was baby’s papa. * “EAST. LYNNE” COMING. will Be Presented at Village Hall, July 29 by a Strong. Company. , Itasca Hive, L. O. The re: cel a jome regalia, and are desirous of raising funds to complete payment therefor. The company that will appear in their. behalf is recog- nized ia the larger cities.as one of the very best now traveling. . Following is what the Duluth News Tribune has to say of the company: “A strong story. a good story, well told by the Brownridge & Collins “East Lynne” company. ‘Three per- formances of ‘‘East. Lynne” were given to full houses, two were given in the afternoon and one last night. Each performance was wel] received with a large and entusiastic audience, “East Lynne” has been seen many times, but itis always new. There is enough comedy put in the p‘ece ta afford relaxation of spirits and enough serious and tender pathos to bring the tears to many eyes. The com: pany puts on the piece effectively and with force sufficiently to draw out the heart of every woman that hears the play... Last .night’s performance was the fourth given, as the piece was put on for the first-time Monday night. It will be repeated tonight.’’ SPECIAL ELECTION . POSTPONED. The .
