The bond of E. C. Kiley, publisher of the Grand Rapids Herald-Review, in the sum of one thousand dollars, with E. C. Kiley as principal and W. C. Gilbert, D. M. Gunn and A. M. Jobson as sureties, for the correct publication of the tax list of Said cousty as rendered to him by the county auditor, was read and on mo- tion duly made and seconded, was ap- An application from Chas. Kearney was read in which he applied for the appointment of assessor for the county of Itasca, On motion duly carried said application was laid on the table. The application of T, E. Dockery, for the abatement of taxes on the lands owned by the Hannaford Im- provement Co. in the plat of Hauna- ford was read, after careful considera- tion was recommended to the State Auditor for approval. Applicaton of Jessie M. Lawrence, for the cancellation of taxes, upon lands assessed prior to the entry of, and white said lands were the proper- ty of the United States, was recom- mended to the State Auditor for approval An application of Jessie M. Law- rence, for abatement of penalty and Bass Brook, was read and after care- ful consideration of same, the applica- tion was recommended to the State Auditor for his approval. Mr. A, 8. Clair appeared before Resolved, That the statement §pre- pared by the county auditor is hereby approved by this board and the audi- ditor is hereby authorized to cause the same to be published pursuant to law, and the board respectfully sub- mits the statement to the taxpayers of Itasca county. The resolution was adopted. The following resolution was oftered by Commissioner Leeman: ‘That, Whereas, At a meeting of the board of county commissioners of Itasca county, Minn., held on the 6th day of January, 1899, a resolution was duly adopted designating the Grand Rapids Herald-Review the newspaper in which should be pub- lished the financial statement, the pro- ceedings of the board of county com- missioners, and any and all matter by law required to be published; Now Therefore, Be It Resolved, That the auditor in and for said Jtasca county, Minn., be and 1s_here- by instrusted and empowered to exe- cute a contract on vehalf of said county of Itasca, Minn., with E, C. Kiley, the publisher of the Grand Rapids Herald-Review, pursuant to said resolution and at the maximum rate fixed by law. Roll call being taken, the resolution wasadopted. | Commissioners Ever- Rellis, Myers and Leenian voted for said resolution; Commissioner Fuller voting no. Commissioner Myers then asked that he be allowed to change his vote to no. The recommendation of the out- going board of county commissioners that the incoming hoard require at missioner Fuller offered the following resolution and moved its adoption: Whereas, Itasca county was inter- ested in the event of the quo warranto proceedings brought in the supreme court to test the title to the seat of commissioner from district No, 2 of this county, end a majority of com- missioners deemed it advisable to em- ploy counsel to carry on the proceed- ings and did employ C. L. Pratt as attorney to prosecute said proceed- ings; be it Resolved that the sum of ninety- six dollars and fifty cents be paid to C. L. Pratt to recompense him for his services and expenses and costs ad- vanced in said proceedings; that a warrant upon the treasurer of the county bejdrawn for said sum for said purposes. Commissioner Leeman took excep- tion to the resolution as offered on the ground that the county commis- sioners or a majority thereof did not employ counsel, and did not employ C. L. Pratt ag attorney to prosecute said proceedings, and asked that the resolution be laid over until the fol- lowing day in order to inquire as to the right of the commissioners to al- low said ciaim. The objection was overruled. Roil-call being taxen the resolution was carried by the foilow- ing vote: Commissioners Everton, Myers and Fuller voting fur the reso- lution and Commissioner Leeman vot- ing no. Upon motion properly carried the board adjourned until Friday mora- ing, February 17th, 1899, at 10 o’clock a. m, Friday, February 17th, 1899, 10 o’clock a. m. Chairman was taken up, and after careful con- sideration the sureties on said bond were deemed sufficient and it was moved, seconded and carried that said bond be approved by this board, A recess was taken until one thirty p.m. At 1:30 p. m. the board met, ail the members being present. Chairnian Rellis announced that he had been called home by telegram and that he could not take further buy clothes for him, and roquested the board to instruct bps what to da in the matter.
