Seaman.’, In an§wer to the article published in the Grand Rapids; Magnet of, the 28th ult., which ponyrece sme, with things that are false, 1 take this the first opportunity to deny the charges therein. First, Moore bas charged me. with having offered to take $1,000 damages for siete | trifled with my wife's affections.. deny ever having made such an offer, ' Moore did otfer me’$1,000 if I would refease my wife and say. nothing aboub my injured and the ruin. of my home. | He. next says that he (Moore) had to bring an action to- recover $750 that I owed him, ‘This is false, atid in making the statement Moore brands himself asa liar. There js no record to show that such an action was.ever instigat- ed, and I demund that Moore retract these charges orI will bring an action against him for libel. Now, to make some things clear to the public, and inasmuch xs Moore.bas told that he knew me in South Dakota, I will tell how we became acquainted. I first met Moore in 1885, but I did not be- come. intimately acquainted with him until 1889. operating a steam threshing maehine at that time and he was in my employ as a feeder duriug the threshing séason of that year. I was instrumental in having raised for him at, thap time a sum think of $160, and I have helped him in many ‘Ways. There is no que tion but that it was my efforts that elected him county treasurer in 1890 and again in 1892. What return does he make? ‘He would take away my wife. He hss written letters to my friends charging me with trying to beat him out of $750 that L owed him. Now, as to the horse deal, I will state that Moore forced it upon me. I brought three horses belonging to Moore to Deer River in 1896, and the following year I brought six horses. They have been settled for and L have his receipt. in full for the same. 1 offered to’ settle our business matters in May before he left here, and the only. dif- ference between us at. that timve was the. keeping of the horses and $50 that Moore owed my wife. My wife asked tie at that time to make this $50 a part of the’settlement. In Oct.. 1895, when we made the tinal settlement, he still refused to pay the $50 that be owed. my wife and tyrever did pay it to my. knowledge. ‘[hese are all the facts—let truth, be submitted toa candid world. / F.
