ne oa ae ‘The wage earners of the east elect- ed McKinley, but none are as severe as they in exconating the administra- tion now. If it developes that the destruction of the Maine was the work of the Spaniards, Uncle Sam will turn the dogs of war loose—and Cuba will be ours. id ating about honor and cloaking r &callity with hypocrisy are the most effective devices of the Shylocks who, with the aid of their republicans allies, devour the fruits of honest toil. That tired feeling comes to us when we “listen to the voice of Warner- Dunn,” of the Aitkin Age, proclaim- ing that ‘‘prosperity is here.” The Age is a good newspaper, and under Bro. Warner’s management has been improved to a marked extent, but when its sings siren songs on _ prosperity it insults the intelligence of its readers. Aitkin may be enjoying a season’ of prosperity, all reports to the contrary notwithstanding, but itis not to the condition of business in our sister vil- lage that the Age alludes. but to the impetus the republican party in power has given to the commercial interests of the country as a whole. Does the Age candidly believe thatan era of prosperity is here? If so, whither are those not on the inside to look for an evidence of it? It must be that the Age in only emitting partisan “gush,” but if Bro. Warner has the shghtest suspicion that the promised wave of McKinley prosperity is sweeping over the country, he has but to visit the pale- faced miners of the coal districts, the cotton mill employes now on strike against a reduction of starvation wages, or the firesides of the widows and orphans of the martyrs at Hazel- ton, or interview the employes of the iron and steel mills, or the railroad employes, and he will be relieved of such an impression and be cunvinced that anyone who prates about prosper- ity being here is either a knave or a fool. imber Estimated, Red Lake ' All the pine on the Red Lake reser- vation in the vigimty of Red lake has been estimated and the crews have changed their headquarters trom ‘Thiet kiver Is to Brainerd, at) which point they will recei © insirucuons re- garding the estmating of the remaca- ing reservations. ‘Lhe work of: esti- wating the pme on the Red Lake reservation has been completed in) an unusually short time.
