Day~the Minneapolis lumberman, has been a Gladstone guest during the week. Wm. Wood, representing the Weyerhauser timber interests, has been here several days. . Mayor J. J. McDonald of Swan River was among the visitors at this metropolis on Monday last. Mrs. A. W. Wright ot Hibbing vis- ited with Mr. and Mrs, N. N. Wright at the Pokegama this week. Mrs. W. C. Gilbert expects to leave next Saturday on a visit to her father, Governor McCord, of Arizona. J. A. Brown is in from the woods and will practically suspend operations until the spring-tme comes again. W. E. Martin, 2 Minneapolis real- estate man, has been here on business. There are now fifteen camps in operation on the Winnibigoshish reser- vation, and it 1s estimated that over forty million feet of logs will be put in this winter. James Sullivan was among the representatives from Deer River on Thursday. He reports that his new hotel at the crossing is ready for the plasterers and will shortly be thrown open to the public, been at the \Pokegama during the | N.N. Wright and wife returned from Grand Forks Thursday evening. Mr. Wright transacted business for the Well-Stone company while in | North Dakota. Attorney A. Y. Merill of Min- neapolis was one of the earliest to put in an appearance at this term of eourt, and he has been one of the busiest men in town during the week. Reiner Hoch, the Duluth brewer, was transacting business here yester- day. John Costello is now handling that popular beverage as local agent, arid he finds the demand continually increasing. Mrs. Woodruff, who has been clerk- ing at C. [I. Mars’ the past tew months, will go to Hibbing next week to visit friends for afew days and from there will go to Minneapolis to accept a position. ~The union services at the churches this week have been largely attended and Revs, MacKenzie and ‘Treloar feel well satisfied with the week’s work. ‘Lhe average attendance each evening was about so. Johnson, the Deer River farmer-printer, was down from his homestead this week. The inter- esting reminiscences that a party of early Aitkinites can relate would con- | stitute a charming chapter in the his- tory of this section. Among thos whose experiences, characteristics and business successes 1s well worth re- tellmg in print, Messrs. Willard ‘and Bonness would occupy a conspicuous place. They are both gemal gentle. men who have evidently enjoyed their days to the full limit because they take an optimistic view of hfe, and while doing so they have accumulated very comfortable fortunes. The Grand Rapids patients of Dr. J. D. Titcomb of Duluth will be pleased to learn that he has returned from his earstern tip and is again at his offices in the Providence building. Dr. Titcomb has quite an extensive acquanitance among Grand Rapids people and he is regarded as the lead- ing specialist in the treatment of deseases of the eye, ear and throat in Northern Minnesota. A severe attack of typhoid fever necessitated th doctor’s absence from his office for several weeks. while he was being treated in a New York hospital. He took advantage of the opportunity thus offered, however, to receive special instruction by Dr. Knapp, the celebrated oculist of New York. Deer River Organization. On Tuesday last the people of Deer River signified their desire to institute a village organization by a vote of 47 to 11, and on Wednesday the election was presented to the county commis- sioners by Attorney F. F, Price for their further action. A date was fixed for the election of village officers. The question that has arose as to the pay- ment of licenses into the proposed vil- lage or to the county, has caused some ill feeling that may finally termi- nate in court. G. A. RB. Elect Officers.
