iw ¥ ’ \ THE 'UFF THAT STIN An Indian Trader Who Sold Eesence That Killed the Noble Red Man. The patience and long-suffering of the noble red man on the Mille Lacs reservation has finaly culmin- ted in an unpardonable affront, and ve which loudly clamors for a blood atonement tu appease. It appears to have long been customary for Poor Lo to accept cheerfully, unhesitating- ty and without question, ‘ old thing” from aqua fortis to ginger ale asa substitute for the dearly loved product of “Old Robinsov County,” regardless of consequences, provided, however, that the worship at its shrine did not result in grounds of his fathers, but when a local trader successfully attempted to wring inan article of beverage on him, the sole mission of which appear- ed to be that of speedily converting all who imbibed into ‘‘good Indians” with scant ceremony, forbearance sed to be numbered among cardinal virtues of the dusky sons of forest stream, the long buried resurrected and an ulti- promulgated to the effect. and less fatal article of beverage must hereafter be dispensed among the erstwhile docile wards of a beneficent government in self-defense the standard of revolt would be raised, a jehad proclaimed and a general war of extermination waged upon the venders of the obnoxious tipple. The Duluth News-Tribune cf the 8th inst. | gives the following particulars of this latest Caucassian outrage perpetrated on the untutored and unsophisticated aborigines: Charles Malone, the Mille Lacs Indian reservation storekeeper, who arrested recently ou tbe charge of having sold lemon and peppermint essence to the redmen with the result that three are dead and several have been stricken with blinduess, ranging from total to par- tial eclipse of the sense of sight, was was an immedi- ; ate summons to the traditional bappy | the | { named settle | witne: PROCEEDINGS Of the Board of Trustees of the Village of Grand Rapids, Itasca County, Minneso- | ta, for Meeting Held July 3, 1897. \ A-regular meeting of the village council 6f Grand Rapids, Minnesota, was held in the village hall on Saturday, July 3. 1897. Benin, of which we have heard a good deal during the last few months, brought to Dulutb yesterday by Dep- uty United States Marshal E. L. Warren and lodged in the county jail. Mr. Malone was given a hearing at Detroit, Minn., and was held for trial. The story of Mr. Malone and the | effect of his alleged lemon and peppe! mint essence on the Indians is ar markabie one. He keeps a store ‘at | the Mille Lacs reservation and dves a | flourishing trade in these essenc Uncle Sam has thrown a safeguard around his Indian wards by enacting laws that are supposed to prevent the sale of liquor to them or of even in- troducing it on the reservation. ‘The inordinate love of liquor by the In- dians made some such action neces- sary aud the Indians, deprived of liquor, will drink anything, as a rule, that will intoxicate. It is claimed that the lemon ‘and peppermint es- sences Ubat find their way to the stores of the traders in the vicinity of the reservation equal to the emergency in the matter of prcduc- ing drunkenness, but would be worth- less for cooking purposes. When the | are Indians have money they buy lemon essence or peppermint essence, ac- cording to the individual taste, Mr. } Malone has been supplying the Indi- | ans with these ces for several } years. Heretofore the effects had | never been more serious than those experienced by white people and after an indulgence in poor liquor. 1t said that many white people that trade with Mr. Malone can testify to that fact from personal experience. But a short time ago something un- usual happened. The Indians drank of the essence and in addition to get- ting drunk they died to the number of three and there were four others that came so near dying that it was far froma joke. Then another start- ling symptom developed. A number of the Indians were stricken blind, while others suffered impaired v The Indians were thrown ina_ pani They blamed the substitute for fire- water that they had drank and then they blamed the man that sold it to them. M:lone was the man and he does not deny the charge. The In- | dians clamored for the lifeof Malone, | for they tirmly believed they had been | poisoned and they still think so. Mr. Malone isa plucky man and but for his courage and the dawning respect for Jaw and order in a few of the In- dians he would have been slaughter- ed on the spot. The Indians assert that they will kill Malone on sight if | he returns to the reservation. ess 25. Round Trip $25.
