JOURNAL Assisted by Senior Class, Progress of the Term At the opening of the school year jast fall it could be seen that the school was in a very primitive con- dition; the material was there but it had not been developed. There was an almost complete change of teachers, with seven rooms in session but it was found necessary to occupy the re- maining room making all the rooms in use. Teachers and pupils started in with a. vim to build up the school and to chmb to that pinnacle which | only the ambitious ever attain. Before long a literary society and ating club were organized for the iving the pupils practice d purpose of g in parlimentary law. A manual training room was fitted up and many useful things for the school ve been made by the larger boys. For the purpose of training in the line of practical compo- paper work the O. R. room sition and new I. O. Journal was started and as it is edited by the pupils themselves has beneficial. Music has the rooms and a very been taught in all Glee club organized which has done much toward traimng the voices of proven the up stairs pupils. We all know that to have a strong mind we must also have astrong body accompanying it, so for the purpose of developing those parts of the body not in constant use a complete sys- tem of calisthemcs and gymnasium exercises have been introduced, Practical science in the lnne of nature study has been taken vp during the in touch year, so bringing the pup with nature and teaching them to ob- serve and study for themselves. We owe a great deal of thanks to the 3oard of Education for the many ways in which it has assisted in the work by purchasing material and aid- ing in every way possible. It can be seen by visiting the school that it is progressing toward that high standard which has been before us during the past year and our ambition has been and 1s1n hfe to find a way to make it. B. F. A Word to the Boys and Girls of the Upper Room. During these last tew years of your school days remember that the school 1s the drill hall where you are learning to fight the battle of life. To leave schocl well drilled is to be able to fight with confidence and success. Don’t expect that the teachers can do this drilling or store your mind with knowledge if you are not anxious and willing to receive it. Make up your mind that you will aid the teacher by earnest and con- stant work. When you have anything to do, go right at it and do it; don’t and waste half an hour that will only make it sit down dreading it; seem harder and more distasteful still. Be on time in small things as_ well as great. Good habits are easily ac- quired with perservance. The boy or girl who 1s bebind time at meals and at school will be sureno drop behind in the race for success later in life. If you have this habit of put- ting off things make up your mind to cure it—at once. You will find life very much as you make it. The first thing to decide is, what are you going to make it? The next is to go at it with a vim. Make yourself ne- cessary somewhere. There are thous- ands of boys and girls who would not be missed if they would drop out tomorrow. Don’t be one of this sort. Try to be the leader of your class in work and good manners. And if you cannot be first don’t sit down ina chicken-hearted way aud give up, but strive to get as near to the top as you can, Cultivate and show this spint of en- deavor and willingness; be a power in your own little school world, and then you will not be left in the back ground in the big world when you have to perform the heavier tasks of life in the long years to come. Grand Rapids Debating Club. About the middle ot November last the pupils of the Senior room, not having enough work to compel them to study any night later than 12 p. m., decided to organize a debating club for the sole purpose of bringing out the ability which before and up to that time had been buried under that cover, which is harder than steel, known as fear, timidity or bashfulvess. The first, and, as all organizing bodies have found and always will find, the hardest of al! difficult tasks which come before the first meeting of a club was the appointment of com- mittees on constitution, by-laws, name, jetc. Aftertwo weeks of hard work the several committees brought in their reports and so thcroughly had they studied the needs and devices of the club that almost without any excep- tion the reports were adopted. Per- haps the only report worthy of men- tion here is that of the com- mittee on name. That com- mittee brought this name, “Grand Rapids Debating Club,” = which after much discussion was sent back to the committee, for reconsideration but upon resubmission to the club the report was adopted During the winter when the snow was knee deep and the thermometer registered 40 degrees below zero and the cold northwest wind was blowing a tornado, we sat in the club room and hstened or participated in a de- | bate which of itself would have warm- ed the atmosphere on the coldest day | for a block around. Some of the most interesting sub- jects discussed were, resolved “That International Disputes Should be Set- tled by Arbitration and not by War,” “That the Executuve of U.=S. Should Recognize the Belligerency of Cuba,” ‘“That the Use of ‘Tobacco is Detrimental to the Upbuilding of the Highest Character.” Mabel Day, one of the most ardent and untirng workers of our ciub, seemed to be doomed to lose every debate upon which she was placed, but the records show that she was the winning side of the last debate dis- cussed by that body. “There is glory in a well fought defeat.” Among the journals purchased were | the Arena and Public Opinion, both of which have been of great both as books of reference and as a source of obtaining an idea of what is transpiring in the outer world. One of the most interesting parts of the program was roll call answered by quotations from whomsoever the com- mittee on program might decide. ‘The most humorous of the quota- tions were from Will Carlton and the most instructive from American States- men. We feel deeply indebted to those who assisted us in preparing debates and also to those who attended the meetings of the club. The object of our organization would have been, to an observer of the first meeting, an utter impossibility but we have proved ourselves equal to the occasion by gaining the end sought and more than that by going far be- yond the bound that it was anticipated | we could reach. Thus has our club prospered. The Class of ’97 sends kind greet- ings to the Class of ’98 and though when school reconvenes its members may be scattered to the farthest parts of the globe and per chance some may have passed beyond the dark | river, They earnestly hope that the | Class of ’98 will follow successfully the path which was blazed out by their | predecessors. the value SoM: LOCALS. Miss Adelaide Chishoim friends in Hibbing last week. visited Mr. Hartman of Laprairie has left | afine mounted deer in the school musem. The school board met about a month ago and appointed, Misses Cleveland, Gibson, McCarthy and | Brady, as teachers for the school year of 1897-98. The Grand Rapids Debating Club | met on May 7th and adjourned, to meet again when the president should see fit to hold another meeting next fall. The O. R. I. O. have just received | an assignment of celluloid buttons with the photograph of the school house on them. They are to be sold at the very nominal price of 25c. The editor and staff of this journal | extend their heartiest thanks to the | senior class, and all others, for the | liberty with which they donated _arti- | cles for this paper. We have often wondered, of late, about the way some of our teachers act, but we ceased to do so the other day, upon being informed that they all had wheels. They, (the wheels) all running pretty smooth by now, but a few days ago they gall seemed to get loose, somehow, and could be seen going in every direction especially when they struck some- thing that would’nt move out of the way. This being the last edition of the O.R. 1. O. Journal for this year and | the expiration of the editor’s term of office, we again wish to thank all those who have so kindly donated articles to its success. The pubils of the senior room were hard at work last week trying to pass a state examination in about ten stud- ies. The way they started in on Mon- day morning, went to show that they intended to “pull through” or ‘die in the atttempt,” and as none are dead or even dying we take it for granted that they managed to pass. Mr. Manus ought to be highly complimented for the great . rapidity with which he makes the rye grow around tue school house. You can find him at almost any hour of the day, sprinkling wherever there is liable to be a dry spotin the next twenty-four hours. NOTICE! United States Land Office, Duluth, Minn., June 2, 1897.
