RE A Bit has passed the legislature wicnh fixes five-sixths of a jury in civil cases sufficent to find a verdict. ‘There was some opposition to the bill in the house but it was carried by a large majority. Lawyers generally endorse the change. THE only reports from Washington concerning Page Morns have refer- ence to federal appointments in the Sixth district, and the location of his seat in the house. Page can’t rise much above his seat as a member of congress and he knows no politics heyond the limited confines of spoilation. Governor CLoucH has rewarded one gold Democrat for his party per- fidym the last campaign. James S. O’Bnan of Stillwater, a life long Dem- ocrat who followed the leadership of Lawler and a few others, has been ap- pointed surveyor general of logs and lumber for the First district. The ap- pointed is one of the richest in the governor’s gitt, the emoluments having in years past been estimated at from $30,000 to $50,000 a year. Oxtp Man Pease of the Anoka Union is mad all through and _ refuses to be comforted. Among other things which he has been prompted to say anent the turning down of Anoka in the insane hospital fight, is the following: ‘The present is making ammunition for the demo- |populists. It turnes down the fourth insane hospital commission, the judical | court of Ramsey county and the su- preme court of the state. Ifit keeps | this gait up there won’t be enough left of the republican party in 1898 to talk about.” The Herald-Review is begining to have a pretty good opinion of the present legislature. Dututu is determined to keep con- spicuous in the public press. The St. Louis county grand jury just finished +up its work after having indicted |nearly everybody. in the county and now comes the report that the : grand jury itself is to be invesigated. Several assertions of dishonesty i been made and will be looked into. It is asserted that one member of the former grand jury was sent up among certain range towns upon a “blind pig” hunt. When he returned he reported that he had visited the re- puted blind pig reserves, but that in every case he had drawn blank. Now come some of the alleged blind pig- gers themselves and, so the story goes, declare not only did h: find them in the course of his official visit of in- spection, but that he also made them “put up for protection” in the most approved police officer style. lr APPEARS to be pretty certain that Senator Culkin will be appointed Say You can get anything in the line of Chamber Suits, Parlor Suits, Lounges, Chairs, Bed- steads, Mattrasses, Springs,&c., at rock bottom prices, at Riehardson & Stevens eae AE a Me ae ee Ea ae a ea ee ee ee RR ARERR AEE RE eae ae EE A ae a Ee Rae ae ae ate ee ae aa ae SE LUMBERMEN’S STATE BANK] First Sinte Bank Grand Rapids, Minn. Mr.Cul- kin ts from Wright county and not a resident of this land district and much surprise is expressed by politicians at the action of Morris in turning down such men as John J. Skuse, Mr, Shepherd and others of Duluth who are said to be aspirants for the posi- tion. Page evidently figures that by “passing up” the whole Duluth crowd none of them can feel that they have been espicially slighted. This sort of political cowardice has never yet been known to win, but perhaps Little Man Morris will not realize it until too late. Those who know the senator from Wright say he would make a first class register. BUYIMG NEWSPAPERS.
