J. H. Dunning was in from his Dimond mine camps the fitst of the week. He reported that preparations are in progress to close up work for the season as the prospects fora continuance afe not very éncourag- ing. Logging for the season is about to close down in tls vicinity, Kehl & Deary’s camp will break today and itis expected that the few remaining camps wilt suspend operations within the next ten days. However, it very largely depends on .the condition of the weather. Mike Murray and Frank Beaton are in active training for their finish contest to take place April 3 at O’Con- nell’s gymnasium. They are both in good condition and the go promises to be an interesting one from start to finish. Rev. Dr. Forbes did not arrive last evening to deliver his lecture as ad- vertised, The Herald-Review did not learn the cause of the reverend gentlemen’s failure to appear. He will no doubt visit Grand Rapids at a later date. Several of the railroad companies who own indemnity Jands in_ this county are beginning to place their patents on file. Sims Jr. and his mother are getting along nicely. A. H. Powers received gratifying news from Minneapolis. An employe lost. a leg and demanded $50,000 damages. Attorney C. C. McCarthy delivered an address at Village hall on St. Patrick’s evening that left no doubt as to his ancestry. No patriot of Erin ever spoke more earnestly or eloquent- ly of ths bitter wrongs that Ireland has endured during the past six cen turies, and yet her sons and daughters are in the forefront of civilization throughout the world. Frank Kellar of Grann Rapids, Mich., has written to Wiliam Weitzel of this place enquiring about his chances to get up a glove contest with Tom Murray. Mr. Murray said he would pe pleased to meet Mr. Kellar at any time. and it is hkely \that a finish fight will be the result. Mr. Kellar is a heavyweight with a good record. A little advice is noticed now and then in the columns of the Magnet from the masterful pen of Brother Berdard. This week he “jacks up” the legislature for what he calls “delatory” tactics. The old man ap- pears to becoming impatient about the immigration vill. No use, Bernie, you couldn’t get the job 1f a dozen immigration bills passed. Your work’s too coarse. Mr. H.C. Ackley of the Ackley Lumber company and also of the Itasca Lumber company, arrived from, Minneapolis Thursday evening, and is out looking through the camps of his company with J. P Sims. Mr. Ackley makes a yearly trip to Itasca county and sizes up the log ‘crop of the season before it goes into the streams. He will remain a few days. Editor F, H. Died. -Jerry Hickey, aged abovt 36 years, died at the Ehle & Russell hospital this forenoon about 10 o'clock. The institute will be under the su- pervision of the county superintendent, who will make all necessary arrange- ments for the convenience of teachers and the success of the institute. In- structors thoroughly prepared for the work will be provided They will be furnished with such __ professional books, apparatus and literature as will be of special service to teachers. Lectures and discussions will be ap- pointed for some of the evenings, and every thing possible be done to fill the week with valuable matter. Good teachers and those ambitious to improve, cannot afford to absent themselves. The school officers of the best dis tricts are noticing who take part in the institutes, and those who never attend are not likely to gain promi- nence as enteprising teachers, or to deserve any hearty endorsement from the superintendent. Give the superintendent timely notice of your intention to be present and ask for a syllabus of the work to be done. Work will begun promptly Monday morning and close Friday evening. Be on hand at the begining: Plan to stay the entire week and let nothing prevent giving your undivided atten- tion to its duties. The above 1s a circular letter issued by — State Superintendent W. W.
