Hamilton is up from his Split Hand camp and registesed at the Hotel Gladstone. Gus Narlow returned trom Minne- apolis Wednesday, and went up to his home at Cohasset. The social at Mrs. H. C, Tuller’s Wednesday evening was well attended and a very pleasant affair. S, F. Powers took a short vacation from the hardware house this week and went to the Twin Citiés, D. H. Freeman, of the firm of Free- man & Gray, was at Hotel Gladstone during the early part of the week. Messrs. Kelly and Quigg, the Deer River dromios, have given attention to business matters here this week. President Gilbert, of the First State bank, has returned from a business trp to Hibbing and the Twin cities. The Wild Rice Lumber Co., of Ada, Minn., has made a contract for 3,000,000 feet of logs to be cut this winter. These, with what they have left over of the cut of last year, will make more than 5,000,000 feet to be cut by the company next season. Gen Herrig, Jr., has been in the win cities this week to arrange mat- ters concerning his store business. C. T. Glover has taken his old position with Messrs. Beckfelt & Mather and George Mclonald is assisting M. R. Stevens at the Herrig store. Frasca lodge A. F. & A, M. elected Officers last evening as follows: W. M., E. A, Kremer; S. W., H. D. Powers; J. Nevius, the well-known live stock dealer of Winona, Minn., brought up a car-load of horses for Doc Putney, and returned to Chi- cago this morning having completed a trade for a car-load of cattle raised and fed on the Winnibigoshish reser- vation. The Duluth, Superior & Western railway came into the market for ties again this week and will take al- together about 70,000. Contracts were made quite readily the principal question arising being that of seeuring them at convenient points near the line where the cars can be loaded easily. Lumberjacks that ‘can swing the broad axe straight to the line and those that can drive the piccaroon in sohd have gone up to the tie camps this week. Fred Churchill took a good share of the “talent” to work on | his Deer River contracts. Near Payne, on the line of the Duluth, Mesaba and Northern, that railway is getting out 40,000 ties— just enough to give its men employ- ment during the winter. The work will take about three: months and uses about 50 men, mostly ore men and dock trimmers. ,i.L.
