Bryan has a wonderful eloquence, both in the simplicity of his language and his power of analysis. In the beginning of his New York address he stated the position of the Demo- party and platform in the following admirable manner: “We do not underestimate the forces arrayed against us, neither are we unmindful of the importance of the struggle in which we are engaged; but relying for success upon the right- eousness of our cause, we shall defend with all possible vigor the positions taken by our party. We are surprised that some of our opponents, in the absence of better argument, resort to abusive epithets, but they may rest assured that no language, however violent, no invective, however vehe- ment, will lead us to depart a single hairsbreath from the course marked Paul | BLAINE FOR GOLD A) an | Sp! and dismissed his | silver to be t tution—indeed, American people anterior stitution, law of the dependent of its’ own power bas been conferred on congress to declare that either metal should not be money. in my judgment, no more right to demonetize silver than to demonetize gold; no more power to demonetize either than to demonetize both. this statement I am but repeating stitutional lawyers. of opinion,’ said Mr. Webster, gold and silver, at rates fixed by con- 48 gress, constitute the legal standard of |. and it has been asserted that those whom I have the honor for the time being to represent. not only meditate an attack upon the rights of property, but are the foes of social order and national honor. ‘Tuose who stand upon the Chicago platform are p pared to make known and to def every emotion which infiuence them, and every hope which inspires them. of gove. tunder which we live, and they build their faith upon foundations laid by the faihers. Andrew Jackson has stated with admirable $s and with an em- phases which cannot be surpassed. both the duty and the sphere of goy- ernment. He said: ‘Distinctions in society will always exist under every just government. Equality of talents, of education or of wealth cannot be produced by human insti- t tutions. In the full enjoyment of the gifts of heaven and the fruits of superior industry, economy and virtue, every man is equally entitled to protection by law.’ We yield to none in our devotion to the doctrine just enunciated. Cur ca not for its object the reconstruction of society.. The fact that they are catching four-legged bass in some parts of Minnesota indicates that tne drink habit is still rampant. It takes a pretty good kind of whisky to breed tw-legged bass, let alone four-legged ones. No such freaks, however, are caught along the line of the Saint Paul & Duluth Railroad.
