Grape Fruit i Citrus grandis By Lillian Cox Athey It seems that the name grapefruit was given to this citrus fruit by growers in the West Indies for the reason that the fruits are born2 in clusters of 3 to 12. This was at first known as the shaddock or pomelo, which is a distinct strain that is grown in the West Indies, and the first fruit of this type we sampled. Today this large globose fruit with its slightly bitter, acid flavor is ex- tensively used for breakfast, also for salads and desserts, It is grown in California, Arizona, Florida and the West Indies and is a much more ac- ceptable fruit than the shaddock. Grapefruit trees are very hand- some, large and round topped, with regular branches. The foliage is dark glossy green. The white blos- soms are large and borne in clusters or singly in the axils of the leaves. Here you will find the matured fruit later on. It is a pale lemon-yellow color, flattened spheroid or globose in shape and from 4 to 6 inches in diameter. It has 11 to 14 segments filled with slightly bitter pulp and large flattened seeds. The outer skin may be wrinkled or smooth, quite thick and supplied with many oll glands. Nature s Chlldren 1t is believed that grapefruit trees were introduced into Florida by the | Spaniards in the early part of the 16th century. Not until a quarter of a century agp was their importance recognized by the Florida pioneers. Since that time the acreage planted has grown rapidly, and millions of dollars annually are received by the growers. Several varieties have been devel- oped. The smooth-skinned Triumph, introduced from Pernambuco, Brazil, is one of the most popular. It is medium heavy, smooth-skinned, not bitter, a heavy producer and a strong grower. In California one of the best varieties is the Marsh Seedless. In the United States grapefruit production for the 1941-2 marketing season is placed at 40,233,000 boxes. This means that production is about 6 per cent smaller than the 1940-1 crop, which was 42,974,000 boxes. Of the total grapefruit crop 50 per cent will come from Florida. The quality of the grapefruit canned for 1942-3 will be as good as, or better than, in 1940-1, since the prospects are especially encouraging for the com- ing crop. It is thought that the 1942-3 crop will be the largest on record—that is, if normal weather conditions prevail. The total quantity of grapefruit placed in cans probably will increase along with production and demand, and since the food value is being recognized it is likely that the de- mand for the fresh fruit also will incresse. This will use up the crop, as it should. The juice is canned, as well as the ripe pulp, and the whole raw fruit sent to the markets. With the assurance that & bumper crop is promised for the next year we can enjoy our grapefruit to our heart's content. ) Rural | D. C, BATURDAY, F. W. These are two important factors that should control selection of a Cemetery. The beauties of Rock Creek Cemetery give comfort to those bereaved in committing the earthly remains of their dear ones to this consecrated ground. Security for the future is of profound importance —for it will be recalled how frequently one sees publication of the financial difficulties which overtake speculatively owned and operated Cemeteries. Under its charter—with its continuing Board of Trustees and definitely established endowment fund, no mishap can befall Rock Creek Cemetery——hence investment in a lot or a site here is safe and sound. Isn't it well to provide for the future with such security? In its dress of green or mantle of white, Rock Creek Cemetery is always beautiful.
