Dr. Parran Honored As Maryland U. Graduates 500 Baltimore Engineer Also Is Awarded Doctorate at Exercises Dr. Thomas Parran, jr., surgeon general of the United States Public Bealth Service, urged gieater stress on the Nation's health in his com- mencement address today at the University of Maryland. Graduates of the College Park branch received approximately 500 of the degrees presented at the final ceremony in Ritchie Coliseum at 11 am. and the remaining 220 went to professional school graduates in the &chools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing in Balti- more. Two Are Honored. Dr. Parran received one of h\o honorary degrees awarded at the exercises, that of doctor of science for outstanding work in the field of | public health. The other went to| Herschel H. Allen of Baltimore, who was awarded the degree of doctor of engineering in recognition of his work as a bridge design specialist. He is the designer of the new Sus- | quehanna River bridge now under | construction at Havre de Grace. Four honorary certificates in agri- culture were awarded to outstanding farmers in the State for achieve- ment in special fields, Chester Fox Hockley of Hydes, light draft horse industry; Harry Hugo Rieck of Pres- ton, poultry, especially broilers; Wii- liam Frederick Schluderberg of Monkton, livestock industry, and Tobias Edward Zimmerman of Fred- erick, corn breeding. The address of Dr. Parran on *Parallel Lines of Defense” and a luncheon for the graduates on the campus grounds closed the gradua- tion ceremonies. Every county of the State was represented in the graduating class in addition to 20 other States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Alumni Officers Elected. P. W. Chichester of Frederick, class of 20, was elected president of the Alumni Association and Dr. A. A. Parker, 05, of Pocomoke City, was named vice president. Senator Tydings, Democrat, of Maryland and Representative Cole of Mary- land attended the alumni session. Other officers of the Alumni As- sociation elected yesterday are R. M. Watkins, College Park, second vice president, and Miss Mary | Frances Wolfe, Linden; Mrs. Edith Burnside Whiteford, Baltimore; Omar Crothers, Cecil County, and | C. H.
