Dread Yellow Fever Making Last Stand Against Medicine Doctors to Intensify Equatorial Drive, Pan-American Session |Is Told By THOMAS R. HENRY. Medicine has come to its last battlefield with the dread pestilence of yellew fever in the New World. The victorious war which started 40 years ago with the discovery by a Cuban physician and an American Army surgeon that the virus of this scourge was spread by a certain * species of mosquito is ending in a pitched battle in cities and villages of equatorial South America. During the last year, it was re- ‘ ported to the Pan-American Con- ference of National Directors of Health meeting here by Dr. Joao de Barros Barreto, former national health director of Brazil, more than 1,000,000 persons have been vac- cinated in that country with a vac- *cine produced originally by the Rockefeller Institute. With a vac- cine produced from a native strain of the virus, it was reported by Dr. Jorge Bajarano, president of the National Medical Association of Co- lombia, 76,000 have been vaccinated and the campaign will be intensified during the next few months. No Cases in Brazil. Actually, Dr. Barreto said, the precautions against yellow fever have been so successful in Brazil that for a year not a single case | of this malady has been reported due to the mosquito Aedes Egyptae, the insect which until a few years ago was supposed to be its only carrier. It was this mosquito, com- mon in the tropical and south tem- perate zones of the world, to whom the disease originally was traced by Drs. Carlos Finlay and Walter Reed in Cuba. It is common in the Southern United States, a fre- quenter of towns and cities where it breeds in stagnant water and carries the infection rapidly from person to person. From the first the campaign throughout the world, including the Southern United States, has been directed successfully against this particular mosquito. A few years ago cases were reported from the Brazilian jungles. Here the popu- lation was too scant to permit passage from person to .person by means of the mosquitoes and the jungle area was not propitious for the breeding of the particular species. The new type of yellow fever was extremely virulent. It became known as the “newlywed’s disease” because it was especially likely to attack brides and bridegrooms who took up homesteads at the edge of the wilderness. The theory has been that there were animal carriers, per- haps some of the jungle monkeys, which served as a reservoir of the scourge, although they themselves might have developed an immunity to it. True Source Not Yet Traced. The true source of this jungle vellow fever has not yet been traced, but an effective vaccine has been produced. Except for its means of spread, it seems to be identical with the more virulent type of yellow fever which caused the great epidemics of the last century in New | Orleans and Philadelphia. While the “reservoir” remains, it SPAGHETTI MY LITTLE WIFEISA BREAKFAST WAS ONCE A PROBLEM AT OUR HOUSE. [P WHAT A DIFFERENCE n_m]fllmllIlll|lnllmlllIHlllflllllll|III|lllIInmn|||ll|l:| i AW, HECK, ! This is one reason for special vigilance in ex- amining of airplanes landing in Florida from South America. To- day, it was stressed by Dr. C. E. Finlay, national director of health of Cuba and son of one of the original discoverers of the cause of the malady, the air trafic quaran- tine regulations adopted by the Western Hemisphere republics a few years ago as a safeguard against spread of the disease already are antiquated and must be revised at the present meeting. Colombia, Dr. Bejarano declared, had prided itself on being entirely free of yellow fever until last year, when large areas where occasional cases of the jungle fever occurred were discovered. These are consid- ered a menace not only to the cities of Colombia itself, but also to neigh- boring areas of Venezuela. The new vaccine, he said, seems to afford an almost perfect protection. The country was alarmed during the last year, he said, by the discov- ery there of a focus of the dreaded Aroya fever, up to that time sup- posedly confined to the fertile coast valleys of Peru. Apparently it had existed unrecognized for years and been mistaken by physicians for typhoid. In a single year it caused 3,800 deaths, Within the last three months Dr. Bejarano said, it has been brought entirely under control by a combi- nation of methods worked out by Colombian physicians. This has in- volved great improvements in hous- ing and sanitary conditions in the country districts, financed by a de- liberate devaluation of the Colom- bian currency. Otherwise great improvements in general health conditions were re- ported by the South and Central American delegates.
