'After attending Harvard College he went to Germany to study. He matriculated at the Uni- versity of Strassburg and later the University of Leipsig, which awaraed him his B. A. degree in 1887 and his Ph, D. in 1893. He next taught at Harvard, Bryn Mawr College and the University of Wisconsin before coming to Wash- ington in 1902. Here he accepted a position as assistant physicist in the Bureau of Soils of the Depart- ment of Agriculture. Four years later he transferred to the Bureau | of Standards, where he worked as a physicist until his retirment in 1937. Dr. Buckingham, at the time of his retirement, was a recognized au- thority in the field of thermody- namics and fluld mechanics. He was consulted by scientists and the Navy Department, which fre- quently sought his advice on steam | turbines and screw propellors. Throughout his career he declined administrative responsibilities, to avoid interruptions of his own in-| vestigations. Served on Defense Council, | During the World War Dr. Buck- ingham served as a member of the Council of National Defense and APRIL 30, 1940 in 1918 was sent with & pecial mission to Rome, where he served as associate scientific attache at the United States Embassy. From 1910 to 1912 he was mitted a special leave of absence from the Bureau of Standards to teach thermodynamics at the val Academy. Dr..Buckingham was the author of numerous scientific | papers. His lucid tract, “Outline of the Theory of Thermodynamics,” published in 1900, is still one of the | best available works on the ject. Dr. Buckingham was president of | the Philoscphical Society of Wash- | ington in 1915 and was a member of | the American Society of Naval En- gineers and the Acoustical ciety of America. He belonged to] | the Harvard and Cosmos Clubs. His funeral will be private.
