Electric Timer Put in Position For Alaska’s Ice Derby By the Associated Press. NENANA, Alaska, April 5—A tri- pod, carrying the wire to a guarded electric clock, stood on the Tanana River ice here today, challenging all Alaskans to fatten their purses by guessing what day, hour and minute the clock will stop. When the ice moves the wire will draw taut and trip a mechanism stopping the clock. The prize money in the 23-year-old contest will go to the persons whose guesses most nearly approximate the time of the spring breakup. The ice is thick, but riddled by cracks, and the thousands of guess- ers, from all over the territory are using everything from just simple. unscientific “hunches” to elaborate mathematical and meteorological formulae in Alaska’s modst popular indoor winter sport. Earliest recorded date for the ice movement was 4:03 pm. April 26, 1936; latest, May 15, 19035, at 1:32 pm: Interest naturally lies in the breakup, for it means the begin- nings of navigation on the in- terior rivers, including the mighty Yukon, and the coming of another season of mining activity. Last year, when the ice went out at 1:26 p.m,, April 29, nine Alaskans divided $97,000.
