Burgess Through knowledge only, it is plain, To wisdom may you e'er attain —Old Mother Nature. 'HE cubs nearly tumbled from their perch high up in a tree in the Green Forest. It probably wouldn't have hurt them much if they had tumbled, for Bears have a way of dropping out of trees to the ground without getting hurt. What made them so nearly tumble was aston- ishment. They were so astonished at what they were seeing that they almost forgot to hold on. Their eyes looked as if they might pop right out of their funny little heads. What were they looking at? Mother Bear and Prickly Porcupine, who unex- pectedly had met on the ground, and Mother Bear was backing away. It was this that was so astonishing. They hadn’t supposed that in all the Green Forest was anybody who could make Mother Bear back away, and here was some one who wasn't so very much bigger than one of them- selves doing that very thing. Mother Bear was growling. It was a deep, ugly, rumbly-grumbly growl. Then the most astonishing thing of all happened. Prickly Porky sud- denly turned around so that he was back to Mother Bear. At the same time he seemed to grow until he looked almost twice as big as he had looked before. This was because he had made all the little spears hid- b THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. He was backing toward Mother Bear, and as he backed he was switching his queer tail from side to side. Mother Bear snarled and backed faster. Prickly Porky backed into a log. Backing that way, of course, he didn’t see where he was going. When he felt that log he turned around and pushed his head as far under it as he could. Then he dug his claws into the ground and kept that tail thrashing from side to side. Any one trying to hurt him now was bound to get the worst of it. When she reached the foot of the tree in which the cubs were she ordered them down. They didn't have to be told twice. They scrambled down so fast that when almost down one did fall and landed with a thump at Mother Bear's feet. Once more she circled around Prickly Porky, the cubs at her heels. He was still thrashing his tail from side to side. “Whenever you meet that fellow keep away from him,” growled Moth- er Bear. “Why?” asked one little Bear. “Because I tell you to,” growled 4 Mother Bear. “And especially keep out of reach of his tail.” “Why?” persisted the little Bear. “Because you will get hurt if you don’t,” growled Mother Bear. “Does he fight with his tail?” asked the other little Bear. “Yes,” replied Mother Bear. “He doesn’t fight with his teeth or his claws, but he does fight with his tail.” “That’s a funny way to fight,” said the first little Bear. “You wouldn't think it funny if you should be slapped by that tail. No. indeed, you wouldn't think it funny at all,” replied Mother Bear. “I could hit him with & paw harder A than he could hit me with that tail,” boasted the second little Bear. “If you did you never would hit him a second time,” responded Moth- er Bear. “Why?” asked the little Bear. “Because,” growled Mother Bear, “your paw would be stuck full of those whitish things you see stand- ing up ail over him and covering his tail. You would have an awful time getting them out, and you wouldn't be able to use that paw for a long time. Any one looking for trouble will find plenty of it with Mr. Porcupine. That is | Wool to Star in Film. Industrial Yorkshire, England, is to be seen on the silver screen soon when a London company will produce a film giving the story of wool. It will show how woolen goods were made before the days of steam-driven machinery; the progress from about 1750 on, and the methods used in 1937. The Australian sheep farms on which the wool for the Yorkshire mills is grown will be in the film, 3 The Royal Exchange of London was established in 1556.
